Dance Tip of the Week:
The tip this week is about Dancing
vs. Learning Steps.... (Slightly recycled tips)
Are you learning steps or learning how to dance? Most new
dancers want to learn more and more new steps. The old ones are
still not mastered and they are ready for something new. If the
new dancer wants to learn how to dance and become a popular
leader or follower they should pay attention to the principles
of lead and follow. A few of the tips below may help.
1. Start thinking of lead and follow as a conversation between
you and your partner.
2. Think of enhancing your lead with more frame movement and
less independent arm and hand movement.
3. Ladies, work toward becoming super sensitive to your
partner's lead. Pay attention to every change in body position
and hand movement.
4. Men, start to eliminate false leads and extra hand and body
movement that will confuse the lady.
5. Pay attention to your head position. Looking in a different
direction WILL cause your body to turn in that direction. That
may be good or bad but needs to be remembered.
6. Men, try to back off your lead until you reach the least
amount that will still convey your intent. Why shout when a
whisper will do?
7. Do the basic steps well before taking on the complicated
ones.
8. When learning a routine ask your teacher to let you learn all
the steps and then connect them. That way if you forget one you
don't lose them all.
9. Don't practice your routine on someone other than your
regular partner.Chances are you won't be a able to lead them
through it anyway. (And that does not impress them either)
10. Stay on time with the music.
11. Check your posture.
12. If a styling move or added step gets to be the norm, get rid
of it.
13. Men, every lead should produce a reaction from the lady. Pay
attention to what kind of reaction your lead produces.
14. Learn to dance small before making it big. It's easier than
learning big then trying to dance small.
15. No matter what level dancer you are keep taking basic
lessons when you can. We offer one on Sunday before
the dance.
If you want to be
able to dance better socially but are having trouble gaining the
needed skills give our group classes a try.
"Never
work with kids or animals."

Featured Song of the
week: Featured is a West Coast Swing,
That's the Way love goes performed by Norman Brown. It's a nice
upbeat but long Jazz WCS with a familiar melody. -

Note:
Additions to our emailed "other venue" dances will be
included at our discretion. (and if we have time to post them)
Not included will be:
1 - Dances located in non-dance businesses (Bars, Night Clubs,
etc.) They can afford their own advertising and never promote our
dances.
2 - Dances that conflict with our schedule
3 - Dances run by instructors and/or studios engaged in unethical
lesson sales.
4 - Dances run by instructors/studios/individuals that do not
promote our social dances as a return favor.
5 - Dances that I do not know about. I can't include them if I
don't know of them.
6 - We seldom advertise lessons offered by instructors outside of
DanceSportVA. There is just not that much space in this
newsletter.
We promote venues that offer a clean, well run social dance
atmosphere. As a rule, although we promote dances at different
venues, we do not promote studios or instructors other that those
we work with and trust.
