Culture Shock
I was told by a Ballroom dancing friend that they never attend our Sunday dance
because all we play is CW music. I guess if you have never listened to this
genre of music it would be a terrible shock to one's system.
If you possess a similar attitude toward CW music let me attempt to change your
mind and hopefully entice you to come out one Sunday evening.
We do not play all CW music on Sunday. We do play some, and since Walter is the
DJ, the music that he likes plus requests are played.
You will hear very few CW waltz songs as I don't like that many CW Waltz songs.
Our Night Club Two-Steps are a mix also with more non-country songs that sound
better.
You will hear almost all CW Two-steps as that is what works and although Neal
Diamond and Barry Manilow may have a few Two Step recordings they sound, well,
funny. Kinda like a duck out of water.
You will hear a split on Cha-Cha. If I want it as a couple dance I like Latin.
If I want a Pattern Partner dance I play CW. Most Ballroom dancers instinctively
dance Rumba to the CW Cha-Cha songs. I works for them so it works for me.
Although I have a couple of CW Sambas it was a mistake to play them as the CW
guys want to dance Two Step to them. Now they Two-Step to ALL SAMBAS. It looks a
little weird but works and they are having fun. I guess that's payback for the
ballroom guys dancing Rumba to CW Cha-Cha.
My East Coast Swings are split again with a nod to the faster CW swings and
slower Rock and Roll songs. Think Elvis for good swings.
My West Coast Swings are all over the map. I play a few good CW songs but prefer
Jazz. As we have lots of WCS dancers and they all like different styles I mix it
up using a dose of Blues, Pop, Funky stuff and even a little Rap when I can't
avoid it. It seems like there are not too many music styles left out of WCS and
I play most.
Our Hustles are solid Disco music. I looked, but didn't find, a single good CW
Hustle.
Foxtrots are standards and none are CW tunes. Yes, I know Dean Martin had a
Country Western album and movie but It just doesn't sound or look right.
You will hear no CW Rumbas and Tangos. While Salsa, Mambo and Merengue are
solidly in the Latin music kingdom. I just wish I could understand the words.
I'm always afraid I'll wind up with a song bad mouthing someone's mama or worse
which is why I don't experiment with these ones.
For the Polka dancers, one week I like traditional and the next CW. Both are
pretty good and the dance is so fast who can take time to worry about the words?
We do have a few dances that are firmly in the CW realm. We dance the Wagon
Wheel (Barn Dance) but Elmer started us using Sugar Shack by the B-52s. It's a
great mixer but not the same when Elmer is not there. We also play all CW for
the "Traveling Cha-Cha" and "Schottische" Anything else would not fit.
By now, hopefully, you realize just how many dances we play music for on Sunday.
Yes, we have some CW but none that are really "twangy cry in your beer" songs.
I gotta hand it the CW dancers who come out. They are learning all the Ballroom
and Latin dances as well as improving their CW. I also tip my hat to the many
Ballroom dancers that now know Two-Step and Cowboy Cha-Cha.
If a little CW or non-CW music is keeping you away the cost is only $5.00 and
with the snacks, drinks and good company the dancing can be almost a bonus.
