Dancing can be so technical. Or not...
It all depends on the dance, the instructor, and student.
If you are learning - Don't expect to learn all dances quickly. Some are hard
and others are easy as "Falling off a Log" If you want to ride a unicycle don't
expect it to be as easy as when you learned to ride a tricycle.
If you are teaching - To much of the technical stuff has chased away many
dancers. Get them moving and don't overload them with information. Remember that
dancing is a skill and ONLY learned through practice. The student has to move to
practice. All the books, diagrams, videos and explanation ever produced will not
teach someone to dance without lots of practice.
If you are student (aren't we all?) practice often. Our Sunday night dance is a
great place to practice all of the couple dances and when crowded you can really
work on your floor craft. Come in before 6:30 and we will put on music for
practice. Come in later and it gets really crowded until about 9:30. After that
there is lots of room and we leave the music on after 10pm while we are cleaning
up (most Sundays until almost 11pm). We want you to practice.
A teacher is one
who makes himself progressively unnecessary.
