Dance Shoes..
I find that the more I dance the more I'm aware of my dance shoes. Well, this
only makes good sense but may be something overlooked by many dancers.
As I progressed and began dancing many different dances I also find I am
using different areas of my feet for each style of dancing. My Waltz has always
required more heel use than Swing. The bottom line is; I am asking for a lot of
support from my dance shoes.
Everyone has their own favorite dance shoe, style of shoe (or boot) and heel
size. Latin dancers prefer a taller heel to force their weight forward; Country
Western dancers use dance boots; Teachers and many dancers have a pair of "dance
sneakers," for relief of their feet; and many new dancers only wear street
shoes. Tennis shoes, commonly worn by many casual dressers are not usually
very good for dancing - they are designed NOT TO MOVE, as in basketball - dance
shoes need to move and turn easily on the dance floor.
My preference is a low heel dance shoe rather than a Latin shoe or dance boot. I
like my shoes very loose in order to keep my feet cooler. I like my well worn
shoes but find that if they get too worn they lose support. I found the hard way
that cheap shoes hurt and don't wear well. I haven't tried dance sneakers and am
wary of the rubber soles. Judy gets great wear from her bowling shoes and at
$20.00 a pair she will wear them when the floor is less than perfect.
We urge everyone dancing to invest in several good quality dance shoes. I found
the best shoes also cost the most but will last longer also. Make sure the fit
is good and for extra comfort add a cushioned insole when trying them on. The
best insole we have found is suede covered. Invest in some kind of shoe bag, a
shoe brush and an extra set of laces.
If you are a dancer, your feet and legs deserve the best you can provide.
(How many of you were Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts? What did they tell you,
when you were starting a long hike? My Scoutmaster told me to wear two
pairs of socks, one thick pair - and one thin pair. This also works
for long dances - it allows the socks to slide together, reducing friction on
your feet.
[Men, keep this quiet, but your wife's ankle stockings, worn inside your socks does a wonderful job of that...Or you can buy them at any bargain store for less than a buck - or five bucks for a box full of them.]
