Good dancers without instruction:
For the vast majority of dancers there was a time when dancing consisted of
either free style while apart on a dance floor or with a partner to a slow
dance. There was nothing in-between. Now, when we go to a social dance outside
of a dance studio we are only moderately aware of those who have not taken
lessons. To us, they are mostly "in the way", obstacles to dance floor
navigation and so on.
Lately, when Judy and I are out on the town, I have been observing many of these
"un-trained" dancers. I have noticed that there is a big difference in ability
that does not come from training. Just by watching the dance floor during a slow
song you will pick out a few couples who really look good together.
I have tried to see what it is that makes these few dancers look so much
better that the others. What I have observed can help make all of us better
dancers.
1. Moving together - No jerky movements. It looks like two people moving as one.
Smooth dancing!
2. Musical interpretation - Yes it's a slow dance but some just seem to move
better to the music. Music flows and so should the dancers.
3. Awareness of surroundings - The better looking dancers seem to enter, exit
and dance without causing others to avoid them.
4. Better attire - The better dancers even look better when not moving. Clean,
pressed clothes, good haircut or hair style and appropriate shoes. No slobs
among the bunch.
5. Better posture - The better dancers seem to be holding themselves up without
hanging on their partner.
6. Better attitude - More smiles and more polite to each other. More confidence.
7. And we're sorry but no one looks good while dancing free style.
All of the above can be acquired without dance instruction. None can be acquired
without common sense. If the above points can make so big a difference between
"Un-Trained" dancers think what it can add to our dance "Training"
