Two Step Tidewater Sunday Dance News

(10/22/2007 22:34 wh)
I have had a few discussions lately about dance music. Most always it centers around Ballroom dancers and with what kind of music they are comfortable.
There are many Ballroom dancers who prefer music that is made specifically for ballroom. This music is a cover of a popular song that is recorded by a studio orchestra to a tempo that strictly adheres to what is considered "good tempo" for a particular dance. We normally refer to this as "Strict Tempo" music. I have a couple of these cd's and while some of the music is quite good some is not. As a rule the music is very danceable but also un-inspiring.
On the other hand, if we are faced with an evening of very inspiring, but not very danceable music we would quickly tire of trying to figure out what dance to use.
When choosing your music keep an open mind and pick out music that will work well during different times of the night or day. Music with a well defined beat and recognizable dance rhythm is best used during or right after a lesson. It is designed to be practice music
Another big difference between the two types of recordings is the length. Strict Tempo music is recorded to a more consistent length than popular music.
As a rule we try to avoid "Strict Tempo" music on Sunday because our dance is not a practice party. Our Sunday dance is a social dance and we feel that the popular music is more suited for a social party atmosphere. Although an occasional goof is in order we try to pick out music that comes close to a good dance tempo. Our music does vary in length but most songs over four minutes are faded out.
Just as we ask dancers to learn several different dance styles we also ask dancers keep an open mind about music. Your mood and needs may change from day to day.
