I am asked many times about my dance music collection. Many dancers want to know where to find and how to recognize good dance music to practice by. You can purchase "made for dancing" music over the internet or in the major music stores (or at any of the local or national dance competitions or events). If you want "just something" to practice to this is great. If you want music that has a little more "feeling," it takes a little more work.
We subscribe to the Dish Network. On that network, one step above basic, they offer about 30 full time music channels. This is where about half of my music ideas come from. my wife and I seldom watch TV but keep the music channels on when we are home and indoors. The easy listening channel is good for finding Waltz music the Jazz & Blues channels offer many songs that make good Cha-Cha, WCS and Samba music. The country channels have a good mix of Country Two Steps & Swings. and the Latin channels have what else but Latin. I would imagine that Direct TV has these channels also. I'm told that Cox does too but at their prices you would want more out of the service than music. You can, of course, use this for immediate practice, but I find it more useful for locating and deciding on which music I wish to purchase for my collection. If you have it recorded, you can practice to it over and over - as opposed to one-time, while it is playing over the stations.
I get another 10% of my "new" dance music from my old albums, cassettes, and 8-tracks. I have several hundred albums alone which were mostly purchased before I was a dancer/DJ. On the rare free night I pull out a couple of Dean Martin, Beach Boys or Jazz albums and rediscover many good dance songs.
I also "find" many great songs on the local radio stations. WFOS 88.7 is a favorite. Weekdays afternoons features the "Blues Traffic Jam" where you can find a good WCS every third song or so. Late nights are the "Big Band" songs. From classical to rock they don't seem to get in a rut.
On WHRV 89.5 listen to Jazz with Jae Sinnett from 9pm to Midnight. He gets on a roll sometimes and has many great dance songs. Saturday evening from 8:30 to 11 pm Neal Murray hosts his "Saturday Night Fish Fry".
As usual, the country stations provide some good "danceable" music but not as much as before.
If you are into Latin, tune into WHOV 88.1 Saturday mornings from 7am to 11am for some great Latin hosted by Roberto.

Web Sites of the week:
I keeping with the music topic here are a few live feeds to enable you to listen to music while you are at the computer.
WFOS 88.7 - http://eclipse.cps.k12.va.us/stream1.html
WHRV 89.5 - http://www.whro.org/radio/stream/whrv.wax
Elvis - http://solosong.net/elvis/elvis.html ( Solo Songs Place ( http://solosong.net/ ) - VERY Rich site, with Music & Poetry, and Graphics. You'll find a long list of your favorite favorites and oldies, by song, and by artist. We especially like their Elvis Presley collection of over 85 songs, spanning his entire career (the only collection that we have seen that is more extensive than this is owned by Eleanor Bowers (a local dancer, who is no longer on the dancing scene) - http://solosong.net/elvis/elvis.html
Send me more links and we will add them to our web site.
