Merry Christmas Dancers!
We had a wonderful social dance last week. We really like the holiday music
and Christmas spirit. This week we have several things going on. First, we
hope to welcome Will back. He has been through so much these last several
months that we want to have all his friends in this Sunday to welcome him
back and try to make up for lost time. Second, Judy and I are planning to
dance our Waltz and Country Two-Step in costumes complete with Hat and
boots. Since we stopped competing we seldom get to dress up and Will's
return is as good a reason as we get. We also plan to bring in a Christmas
cake to add to the food table.
Once again, we want to mention the USABDA New Years Events. Judy and I have
a floor-side table for eight with at least four seats open. If you purchase
a ticket ask if any seats are left at our table. We hope to fill the table
before New Years. No matter where you sit, the dance floor will be close by
and the music this year will be the best ever. Ray, Wanda and all the USABDA
gang have been working extra hard to make this the best New Years event
ever. (Wanda tells us that every time we see her).
This Sunday at our dance we will be teaching the basic West Coast Swing at
6:30. At 8:00 we will review and continue the Night Club Two-Step move
taught last week. No dance or lesson on the 29th. In January we hope to
start a country two step series. For those who want more advanced
Country-Western lessons check out what Sam & Denise are offering. The
classes are listed under on-going events and workshops on our website. For
Ballroom instruction ask us for a calendar this Sunday.

Why do you go out dancing and what are your goals in dancing?
This may or may not be something that you think about but perhaps you should
be. It's not something that you need to spend lots of time pondering but
maybe it should cross your mind once in a while.
So, just what kind of dancer are you? Judy and I were once competition
dancers until we re-thought our goals and realized we couldn't put in the
time necessary to improve our dancing and keep us happy with our
performance. When we can put in that time we will re-evaluate our goals and
may return to competing.
If your goal is to be an excellent social dancer you need to ask yourself if
you are improving in the areas necessary to becoming a better social dancer.
Do you ask different men or ladies to dance? Do you work on your lead &
follow when you do? Do you work on your social skills? Do you evaluate your
dance frame and posture? These are things that dancers sometimes take for
granted but often overlook. Even some excellent competion dancers lack the
qualities of a good social dancer.
If your goal is to compete and become the top in your level you need to set
different goals and look at dancing very differently. You may need to trade
off social dancing in order to become a better competitor. Being the best
competitive dancer takes constant and intense training.
Maybe you don't have any goals and just go out dancing to have fun and meet
people. There is nothing wrong with that approach. But, if you are that type
of dancer, ask yourself what kind of impression do you make on others. We
have seen some dancers who may be perfectly nice people off the dance floor
but turn into idiots on. I have seen guys open doors for ladies but not know
how to ask a gal to dance. We have seen women dress in outfits at a dance
that they wouldn't dare wear any place else. A dance is not a place to leave
your social skills at the door.
They are many dancers, women mostly, who like the exercise gained while
dancing. It's true that dancing is a great way to exercise but while you
exercise practice your control and balance as well.
No matter what kind of dancer you are or why you go out dancing, you can
enjoy yourself more and leave a better impression if you take time and think
about what you are doing.
