Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello Dancers,

Thanks to the nice group of dancers who came to our dance last Sunday. We
also thank Joey and Robert for sharing their experience with us during the
lesson. As our knowledge of Salsa is actually Mambo and very basic at that,
the Salsa lesson by Joey was a nice change. Joey is an instructor with "A
Time to Dance" and is looking to start up a Sunday afternoon Salsa workshop.
Email me or Joey if interested. mambo_one@yahoo.com

As usual, Robert Breinlinger, in rare form last Sunday, got everyone's
attention during the West coast swing class and then taught us a really cool
move. Robert is a member of the Tidewater Swing Dance Club and will be back
again soon to add to our swing dance repertoire. We always look forward to
his lessons.
********************************************
We are looking for a small group to learn a West Coast mixer dance. Cherie
Harclerode, dancedivaonline@hotmail.com has a video done by Jo Thompson that
will help us get started. Email me or her if interested.
********************************************
On May 11th, Mother's Day, we will not have a dance. Please have a pleasant
holiday and use the time to remember your Mother.
********************************************
On May 18th the early lesson is on beginner Night Club Two-Step (Social
Style). For the second lesson we will teach another cool move to the West
Coast Swing dancers who are ready for some more advanced material.
********************************************
This week we have an entire Album of the week. I have a LP by the
Castilians, arranged by Jack Pleis, titled "Valentino Tangos" As the title
suggests the entire album (12 cuts) are Tangos. The music is so smooth that
I often put it on the turntable for late evening listening. Although rare,
the album is still available from used record dealers. (It's on the DECCA
label as DL78952) This record drives home the fact that dance music can be
listening music as well. As the studio doesn't have a turntable I will bring
one in soon so we can dance to some real smooth Tangos.

Feedback...
I got an interesting email from a lady dancer with some comments about a
very few of the male dancers out there. One of the comments was about men
who like to teach as they dance. The lady currently takes weekly dance
lessons at a local studio and is quite satisfied with her instruction. She
really doesn't care to get additional, and sometimes contrary instruction
from a partner. Looking at both sides of the issue we all like to share and
help as well. Although many hints, tips and ideas are helpful some are not.
My opinion to the guys and gals out dancing is to leave the impromptu
instruction out of the dance unless your partner asks for help. If you do
have a suggestion try to word it as such and wait until after the dance.
The second comment was about men who want to hold on too tight. this lady
prefers a light lead and good dance frame. She has danced with once good
leaders who now hold on so tight it hurts. Again, speaking from the man's
point of view, we may not realize that our lead is too heavy unless told.
Hopefully this is done tactfully as our egos are banged up easily. Now there
is a difference between a heavy lead and holding on too tight. I'm not sure
a man needs to be told that he's holding on too tight as it should be pretty
obvious. Smooth Ballroom dancing is danced in closed position but not
socially with an occasional dancer. If the man is simply holding your hand
too tightly let him know. Ladies I know do it also and I try to let them
know politely.
Please continue to send your dance comments.

Below are a couple of links to websites that have some great pointers on
Dance Etiquette.

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
