Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello Dancers,

We had a great time teaching the basic Night club and the West Coast Swing
move last week and will have another great pair of lessons ready this week
with a basic Waltz class at 6:30 and another West Coast swing lesson. We had
a short month of May that didn't allow us to teach all the WCS moves that we
wanted so we will extend the WCS series over to June.

A little background on Memorial Day (from usmemorialday.org)

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for
those who have died in our nation's service.Memorial Day was officially
proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the
Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first
observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and
Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.(There are several
claims to earlier origins as well) It is now celebrated in almost every
State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National
Holiday Act, P.L. 90 - 363, in 1971 to ensure a three day weekend for
Federal holidays)
To remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National
Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at
3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe
in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever
they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."
Too many Americans think of Memorial day as just another holiday. Let's all
try to change that this year.
Portsmouth hosts the oldest continuous Memorial Day parade in the country.
We will make every effort to attend in honor of those who died fighting for
our freedoms.

There is a USABDA dance this Saturday. It will be held a the Knight's of
Columbus at 211 West Government Ave. in Norfolk. They offer a Waltz lesson
from 7:30 to 8:30 included in the cost of admission.
For those who are unfamiliar with USABDA the initials stand for United
States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association. As the name states, the
organization is all about amateur dancers. Yes, it is primarily a Ballroom
organization but there is some music to swing and two-step to as well. Not
all the time, but with Roberto playing this week there will be enough. He is
always ready to play a few more swings when we attend. The best part about
USABDA is that it is an organization for ALL amateur dancers. It is run by
fellow dancers and a great source for dance related newsletters and
information. Whenever we travel we can get a local dance contact through
USABDA. It's a great organization to join and support no matter what your
style of dancing is.

The Song of the week:
This week the song is one of my favorite WCS songs, Heartbreak Hotel the
1956 Single hit by Elvis Presley. At a little over two minutes it's a bit
short for me but a great song anyway. With a few cool moves timed around the
musical breaks this song makes your WCS come to life. Plus Judy loves Elvis.

Last weeks puzzle.
I received no guesses on the author of last week's quote.
"Skill comes by the constant repetition of familiar feats rather than by a
few overbold attempts at feats for which the performer is yet poorly
prepared" The very good advise was spoken by Wilbur Wright when commenting
about the many unspectacular practice glides that him and his brother used
to perfect their glider in the fall of 1902. As we all know they put this
knowledge to use when they made history on December 17th 1903 with their
engine powered flight. Good advise, great results...

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
