Hello Dancers,
Summers almost over (maybe) but on Sunday nights we are heating up the
floor with Cha-Cha. We sure enjoyed seeing all the dancers show up for our
first class on this exciting, energetic dance and with the cooler weather
we had more dancers enjoying themselves rather than sweltering.
Our Cha-Cha series continues this Sunday with a basic lesson at 6:30 and
another hot Cha-Cha pattern at 7:00.

Our Song of the week is "Four Beat Mambo" recorded by Tito Puente, Mongo
Santamaria, Willie Bobo and Carlos "Patato" Valdez on the 1955 "Puente In
Percussion" Album or more recently, on the Carnival Album (released in
1999) This is one hot all percussion Mambo. If you want to try to Mambo to
this one come out next Sunday night and ask for Tito.

Our Related Web Site of the week is a Web page about this great musician
who has recorded so much great listening and dancing music. The Life and
Legacy of Tito Puente is a recorded program available on line by clicking
on the "Listen Now" next to the words Second Hour located near the top of
the page. It was recorded on January 12th 2001. Click on the below link to
view this page. If you like Latin music this is a great find.

Dance Tip;
We have met many new dancers through our Chesapeake series this week and
would like to share some of the dance lingo with them. New dancers have a
hard enough time learning how the feet, body and brain all work together
and can't possibly figure out the lingo at the same time so here is a short
not all inclusive dance term list.
LOD - Line of dance. This is the counter clockwise direction that dancers
travel around the floor.
Dance Frame - Your dance frame is your posture, arm, hand and head
position. This what allows you to communicate to your partner. Your dance
frame should be positive but relaxed enough to allow you to enjoy dancing
but not so relaxed that you lose connection with your partner.
Connection - The part of your frame that attaches you to your partner. The
fewer connection points the more important the connection.
Latin or Cuban motion - The technique used while dancing that transfers
weight from one side of your body to the other achieved by bending and
straightening of the knees while dancing and showcases an exaggerated hip
and leg sway from the rib cage down. Causes a great amount of pain in new
dancers. Looks real cool when done well.
Balance - The ability of the dancer to maintain an upright and controlled
position of the body whether moving, standing or turning.
Foot Position - Five basic foot positions used by dancers to define the
position of the feet on the dance floor. Ask a teacher or experienced
dancer to show you. This is from Ballet.
Floorcraft - The skill used to avoid bumping into other couples and dancing
without pause when boxed in by slower dancers.
Dance Position - The position of the man and lady in relationship to each
other when dancing. Usually Open, Closed, Shadow or Shine.
Quicks & Slows - Quicks are steps taken in one half the time as slows.
Slows are taken in twice the time as quicks. Neither refers to the size of
the steps only the speed taken to step from one foot to the other.
Rise & Fall - The continuous changing of body elevation through the use of
the feet, ankles, and legs. More pronounced in Waltz. Less in Two Step
(hopefully)
Rock Step - A shifting of weight back and forth from one foot to the other,
without moving the feet and danced with one foot forward of the other.
Tempo - The speed of a dance or a piece of music, measured in measures per
minute or beats per minute.
