Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello dancers...

I know how tired we all are of looking at storm damage. Maybe this Sunday
night we can take our minds of it for a few hours. We had many calls asking
about the dance last Sunday and wish we could have held it. There were lots
of people who just wanted a little break and we would have obliged if we
could. The studio's electric was restored Monday.

This Sunday we will continue with the Cha-Cha series. Next we will teach
Waltz for the month of October. We will be teaching a mix of Ballroom and
Country Western moves. As in the past, each week we will teach a basic
class at 6:30 followed by a new move at 7:00.
********************************
The song of the week is a swing. Donald Fagen from Steely Dan recorded
"I.G.Y." (International Geophysical Year) on his first solo album "The
Nightfly" in 1982. At a tempo of 120 bpm it's either a slow ECS or faster
WCS and although a little long works well for both. This album also has a
nice slow remake of Dion and the Belmont's "Ruby Baby" that is about the
same tempo. Come out to our Sunday night dance and dance to these and other
great swing songs.

Recycled Dance Tip: Learning the language of dancing.

This will probably not make you a better dancer but may help you remember,
look forward to or understand the long process involved in learning to
dance.

How many of us watched a child develop from baby talk to conversational
speaking?

Pick up a book and speak out loud random words from the text.

Don't be surprised if no one understands what you are saying. It's true
that you are speaking clearly and using proper words but the structure and
meaning is lacking. The ability to develop meaningful speech from random
words does not come to us instantly. At a very young age we have the
thought process and know what we want to express. We just can't communicate
verbally.

The same process happens in dancing. We watch a great dance movie or
training video then try to imitate the dancing. For the vast majority of
us, just like a child learning to talk, the results are frustrating. Do we
get disappointed in ourselves? I do every time I try to learn. The harder I
try, the more impatient I become. The trick to learning anything is to have
enough patience and keep plugging away until you get the results that you
want.

Did you give up talking when no one could understand you? Do you give up
now when you feel like the most ungraceful dancer on the floor? The answer
to both should be no. In both cases patience and practice will help you
achieve your goals.

Speaking of goals. Once you learn to speak, dance, play tennis, golf, swim
or any other activity don't stop challenging yourself. If your goal is to
become a become a better dancer, work on short range objectives first.

Become a better leader or follower. Improve your turning. Improve your
frame. Work on hands, head, foot position and balance. These small things
add up. Work on and perfect one thing at a time.

Just as an ordinary speaker can become a great orator, an ordinary dancer
can become a great dancer.

We've all heard it and said it. Now believe it! "Practice makes perfect"

We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
