Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello Dancers,

Thanks again to all the people who showed up last week. We were
apprehensive about teaching Hustle but most everyone seemed to get a feel
for the dance. not being professional instructors makes it difficult for us
to teach some of the dances but we hope that we can a least share some of
what we have learned over the years. Hustle is a challenge.

Our Chesapeake classes have kicked off again and we are very encouraged by
the large turnout in some of the classes. After one week we can see some
progress.
****************************************
It's time for a poll again. I get zero feed back each week on what I put in
the newsletter. I started the "Song of the week" and "Web site of the Week"
due to requests. Most dancers whom I speak to now seldom have time to pay
attention to this feature. What is your opinion? I do get dancer's comment
on the schedule and dance tips but would like your opinion on this also. I
have about 500 people on my list and would like to put in what
interests the dancers.

Song of the Week:
This week we have included a great classic Elvis Presley swing song called
"Return to Sender". The words & music are by Otis Blackwell and Winfield
Scott. The song was on the soundtrack of the Elvis movie "Girls! Girls!
Girls! but was released prior to movie on a single. (45 rpm). The song
peaked on the Billboard chart at # 2 in November 1962. A clip of the great
classic song can be heard on the Amazon web site.

On Sunday night we dance to this and many more great popular dance songs.
Please join us one night.

Web Site of the week:
This week let's look at two recent web site arrivals.

http://www.tidewaterswingdanceclub.com/ is the link for our own local West
Coast Swing club. The site has recently been updated and has lots of
information on Swing dancing in and out of the area. If you are interested
in meeting other West Coast Swing dancers this is a great starting point.

http://www.countrybootleggers.com/default.html is the newest arrival of the
local dance web sites. Right now the site is not complete but check out the
information included and bookmark the site for future reference.

Phrasing your dance to the music:
Some of us hear this term applied to dancing but what is it and how does
phrasing make my dancing better. To understand how phrasing applies to
dancing we want to look at the music. A phrase of music is a complete
musical paragraph or thought. An example is Waltz music that has an eight
bar phrasing. If each beat equals one step in 3/4 Waltz time then we will
complete one bar or measure of music with three steps. Listen to a good
Waltz song and find a complete musical paragraph. If you start at the first
beat of the paragraph and count bars or measures you will most likely come
up with 4 or 8 measures. This is your musical phrase. Listen to the Song
"Funny Familiar Forgotten Feeling" sung by Tom Jones. Start counting on the
first beat of music. There are 8 measures before Tom starts singing. Keep
counting and you will begin to see the pattern.

The matching of the dance to the musical phrasing doesn't mean too much to
the social dancer but it can make you more aware of your dancing. If you
have ever accidentally "Hit a Line" in your dancing just as a musical
phrase ended you get a little jolt like you just did something cool. If you
are dancing in Showcases or Competitions phrasing is all important.

Make your dancing more synchronized to the musical phrasing and look cool
all the time. If you dance West Coast Swing or Tango this will really make
it sizzle. Check out this link for more information as related to West
Coast Swing and phrasing -

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
