]]] Dance Tip: Defensive Dancing:
All of us that drive know about defensive driving but how about defensive
dancing?? In researching this subject I found several different concepts of
defensive dancing.
As related to poor dance hall conditions, defensive dancing allows you to
be more comfortable when you surroundings are not. The technique is the
same as for any other venue where you need to dress for the climate.
Dancing is an activity and a smart dancer should dress in layers and keep
them handy for between the dances. Some floors are tile on concrete and not
so easy on the feet. Nothing can eliminate the shock transmitted through an
unforgiving floor but cushioned inserts can make it bearable for longer
period.
As related to partners with poor lead/follow technique defensive dancing
will allow you to finish a dance without serious injury.
--- Rough lead;
When faced with a lead rough enough to hurt, ladies are advised to excuse
themselves and sit back down. If the lead is not that bad then the lady
should not try to out muscle the man. The better defense is for the lady to
anticipate where he is leading and get there first. Then sit down and don't
dance with him again and warn the other ladies.
---- Heavy Lead and heavy follow:
The terms heavy lead or follow have nothing to do with the dancer's size
and everything to do with technique. To understand how to counteract a
heavy lead or heavy follow the dancer needs to figure out why it happens.
Men have a heavy lead due to at least three reasons.
1. Leading at the wrong time (too early or too late)
2. Leading through the complete move.
3. Not adjusting to the lady (ignoring her part of the conversation)
Once the lady figures it out she may be able to drop a few hints or ignore
either the problem or the man.
Women have a heavy follow due at least three reasons.
1. Thinking too much.
2. Poor turn technique.
3. Making the man support them or move them through a turns and moves.
Again, once a man figures out what is causing the heavy follow he can tell
her instructor, who may take care of it (and keep the man out of trouble)or
just put up with it or not dance with the lady until she improves.
It's worthwhile to note that a poor floor and/or dance shoes with mess up
footwork and contribute to a heavy lead and heavy follow every time.

Both of the above are dances and are listed on the above site. There is a
pretty comprehensive list there with a brief description. I never knew so
many dances existed. Learn them all and you just may set a record.

]]] Song of the week:
Neil Diamond is an unlikely candidate to record a Two-Step but "Sleigh
Ride" does the job pretty good. It is on his Christmas Album II and is a
nice medium tempo suited for dancing. Great Christmas song also. Sleigh
Ride was originally composed in early 1948 for orchestra by Leroy Anderson.
Lyrics were added by Mitchell Parish in 1950. Thanks to Cherie for the tip
and use of her Neil Diamond CD.
