Hello Dancers...
Although our last dance was less than two weeks ago It has seemed like
forever. Judy and I are looking forward to starting the New Year off with
our Country Two Step series this coming Sunday. The format will stay the
same. A beginner lesson is scheduled for 6:30 and a more advanced move is
taught at 7:00. The social dance continues from 7:30 until 10pm.

We both wish to thank all the volunteers with the Tidewater USABDA group
for providing the wonderful event held at the Virginia Beach Pavilion over
the last several days. Judy and I attended all five nights but due to my
work schedule could not attend the daytime workshops. Although there were a
couple of minor glitches they
were minor and did not detract from this outstanding dance event.
A special thanks to Roberto Henriquez and Fred Yancey who provided the
music for the event.
Roberto, also known as "El Romantico" provides a one man orchestra for many
of the area dance events. It's not by accident that he enjoys a
enthusiastic following. He has a not so secret formula, a good product and
hard work. If you have not had a chance to dance to Roberto's music check
out his schedule. Just because he plays great Latin music don't be afraid
to ask him for a West Coast Swing or Country Two Step. He plays them also.
Fred Yancey, although not from this area, has provided all of the DJ work
for the entire event. As Fred is a fine dancer himself he has great
collection of popular dance music available for us. If the DJ work was not
enough Fred also pitched in as a Dance Host during the event. During our
next trip to the North Carolina Triad area we will be sure to look him up.
We were delighted to find many Country Western dancers in attendance. We
noticed that many of the Ballroom dancers would get up and try a Country
Two Step when played. We hope that more and more will discover that their
dancing need not be limited to one style alone.

Song of the Week.
This week we offer a classic Two Step by Steve Wariner. Off his 1993 Drive
album "It Won't Be Over You" is a quick 199 bpm Classic Country Two step
that will keep you up on the floor for the entire song. For those that want
to check a sample, click on this Amazon link.

Web Site of the Week:
http://music.dancenantucket.org
The outstanding feature of this site is their collection of dance music. We
have links to many sites with song lists but this site also has some clips.
We don't agree with many of their choices of dance music but many are also
very good. For those of you who want a little help finding song titles this
is a great site.

Dance Tip:
Be aware of those around you.
Fortunately social dancing involves more than just you and your partner. We
always pray that we have plenty of room on the floor but, often we have
either too much room, and it doesn't feel much like a social event or, we
have too little room and it begins to get very close. Crowded or not, there
comes a time during the dance that the couples need to watch out for others
around them. We have observed many couples that do a poor job of this. Like
the erratic driver on the freeway, the erratic couple on the floor may be
in the minority but their presence affects all those around them. Here is a
few hints for you social dancers:
1. Familiarize yourself with one of the dance floor etiquette diagrams. Our
website has one under the dance tips #1
2. Men, you are the driver, pay attention to where you are going.
3. Plan ahead. Don't start a pattern knowing you cannot finish it without
crashing into another couple.
4. Keep your choreographed routine off the social floor unless you are
skilled enough to insert some emergency moves.
5. Ladies, you have some responsibility also. The man cannot see behind.
Keep a lookout and give his hand a squeeze if you are on a collision
course.
6. DON'T BACK UP WITHOUT LOOKING BEHIND YOU.
All this boils down to some common sense about social dancing. Just be
conscious of the others on the floor around you.
