Hello Dancers,
Thanks again for all those dancers who are making our dance a big success
each week. As well as the regulars we also welcomed some new dancers and a
couple visiting from New Jersey. Each week Judy and I are contacted by
someone from out of the area looking for a place to dance and are always
happy to help them out. We also gain an out of the area contact as well.
The Foxtrot continues this week with the same format. It was pretty cool
watching all the Country Western guys picking up the foxtrot so easy.
Next month we will offer the West Coast Swing as the featured lesson before
the dance. In April there will be no dance on Easter Sunday.

Tip of the week:
Momentum is your friend. Does anyone remember from school Isaacs Newton's
First Law of motion? It is often stated that "Bodies in motion will stay in
a straight line motion, and bodies at rest will stay at rest, unless acted
upon by an outside force."
Almost anyone can draw a link between this law and dancing. Although all
three of Newton's laws of motion can be related to dancing, tonight we are
thinking about the first law and how it relates to lead and follow. As a
practical exercise lets start dancing a basic Salsa step and from that step
lead a cross over break to our right. Then lead the same move after a cross
body lead. In the first example we are asking the lady to change her
direction from a backward break to a sideways break. It forces the lady to
abruptly change direction. In the second example we are taking the lady's
forward movement and continuing that movement in the cross body lead and
then transferring her energy into a rotation and cross over break. She is
not making any abrupt movement and the crossover break is completed much
cleaner. In this example there is also a fundamental Law of motion applied
called the conservation of angular momentum. If the lady keeps a tighter
frame and foot position while turning it is accomplished with much less
expended energy.
The bottom line as applied to dancing is, "the greater the change of
direction the more effort exerted to make that change".
If the man keeps these concepts in mind many of the dance moves can be lead
with less trouble. This can only result in a happier dance partner which is
our ultimate goal.
Now which in which dance is Newton's Third Law of motion most important?

Letter from Barry
Hi Walter and Judy,
Thanks for helping to promote Easterns.
I am truly excited about Easterns this year. We have moved into a hotel
that has better dance space and we will be able to keep all the social
dancers happy while also providing a venue for competitors. With 3
ballrooms and a huge "all dance" floor in the lobby that the ballrooms
surround, there will always be a place for social dance. With one ballroom
for couples dancing (Waltz, 2-Step, Cha Cha and more), another for
Swing/Hustle, and a separate one for line dance we can provide a variety
atmosphere that keeps everyone happy. Our lobby dance floor will rotate
between all styles of music and dance, and if any one area is taken up by
competition, then the lobby dance floor will be the place to social dance
if someone doesn't wish to watch or participate in the competition. With
about 40 dance workshops throughout the weekend and dancing at night until
4am (or later) Easterns is the place to be. For full information please
visit http://www.DanceEasterns.com
or call 201-939-4506. We have the top
professionals in all areas coming and it promises to be the dance party of
the year. Our new hotel - the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center in Alexandria
VA has given us an $89 rate for up to 4 people which is unheard of in the
Washington DC area. Reservations can be made at 1-800-Hiltons and mention
the Easterns Washington Dance Challenge.
One of the sponsors of the Easterns is the social dance magazine 5678
Dance Magazine. Information on 5678 can be found at
http://www.5678magazine.com and be
sure to check out the new VIDEO
download site
http://www.MyDanceLesson.com which features couples dance
moves and line dances. A new concept in dance instruction which has the
largest number of dance video downloads on the web and we are adding dozens
of moves and dances every week. While we have mostly added Country, Swing,
and Hustle moves.... soon we will add Ballroom, Salsa, Lindy and more.
Thanks again
