Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers... From our Weekly Newsletter

***********************************

Hello Dancers,

This coming Sunday is Easter Sunday and this is one of the very few Sundays
when we will not be having a Sunday Dance. Also in May there is no dance on
Mother's day as Judy and I will be out of town.

On April 18th we will continue with the West Coast Swing lessons prior to
the social dance. In May the lessons will be on Country Two-Step.

}} Tip of the week

This week's tip comes as a suggestion from a dance friend and explains the
differences in open and closed group classes.

Open Group Classes
Most of the Social and practice parties hosted by local studios offer a
group lesson before or during the dance. These lessons are mostly open to
anyone who has paid to attend the dance. Since there is a different group
of dancers each week the goal of the instructor is to teach a lesson that
can be completed within the allotted time. Most of the time the lessons are
designed to teach a certain move or pattern only. Our Sunday dance is no
different except that we stick to one dance per month. Our first lesson is
on basics only and repeats each week. Some weeks we attempt to build on the
previous week's lesson but only if we feel there a no newcomers to the
class. If newcomers are present then we must start from scratch. We do
attempt to use the second lesson to build new dance patterns. Some patterns
can be broken down into segments and we use a different segment each week.
We are having limited success with this for obvious reasons.

Closed Group Class
This is a class where the dancers sign up, in advance, for a set number of
classes. A beginning and ending date is set and with perfect attendance the
same dancers are in each class. These classes a usually four weeks long.
Our Chesapeake Recreation classes are an exception being six weeks long.
The advantages of a closed
group class is the progression of knowledge. Each class builds on the last
with an overall goal in mind.

Judy and I always recommend closed group classes as a starting point for
non-dancers. These type classes allow the student to progress along with
other students at the same level. It introduces the student to the social
aspect of dancing. Private lessons are great but group classes should be
included at the same time. Many students who start out with only private
lessons hesitate when it comes time to practice in a group or party
setting. The instructor becomes a source of security and everything else is
a vast unknown. During the group classes the student learns how to dance
with many other dancers and quickly learns how to adapt to different
styles.

We only recommend the open group class for experienced dancers who want to
learn a new move, brush up on technique or get in some extra practice time.
If you are a non-dancer who wants to learn how to dance the open group
before a party has only limited value.

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
