Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers...

Thanks to all the people who showed up for our dance party last Sunday. We
sure had a great time. Also, we want to thank Bob & Marge once more for the
Salsa Rueda lesson. They are doing a great job. This week they will try to
get in another move. At 7:00 Walter & Judy will continue with the Night
Club Two Step. Unless we have a change of heart, next month we will be
teaching the Foxtrot.

--- The song of the week is Tania Maria's version of "Waiting for me" This
song is on her 1990 album Bela Vista recorded on the Blue Note label.
"Satisfaction", the other Cha-Cha on the album is much slower but kind of
groovy. I bought the CD several years ago and have never become tired of
the variety of music it contains. Both Cha-Chas are as different as night
and day, one hot the other laid back. Pick your mood and dance.

Our dancing universe is both smaller and larger than you may think. Sounds
contradictory? Well it just depends on your point of view.

For several years when I first started dancing Ballroom I took lessons from
a closed studio. My view of dancing was limited to what happened at the
studio. The lessons and social dances were very good and I was lucky to
have some very gifted instructors but the view was still limited. After
awhile I was invited to a USABDA dance and from there to several open
studio dances. My dance universe was expanded but still Ballroom.

I was introduced to Country Western dancing by Amy Dryden (then Amy Silva)
and found many new dancing friends. I still had my Ballroom friends at the
Friday night studio Ballroom dances but now I had another group from the
Saturday night C/W studio dances. Remember the Rhinestone? There were some
great dancers who came out there as well. After a few years my dancing now
included Swing and Latin. Each style came with a new group of dancing
friends. There was a few dancers who danced at many different venues but
everyone else didn't. After a few trips to some UCWDC Country Western
events I discovered how advanced these dancers were and I wondered why most
Ballroom dancers ignored this style of dancing. I also noticed how many C/W
dancers were also taking Ballroom lesson in order to improve their
technique.

The result of all this potpourri of dancing styles in my dance universe is
our Sunday night dance. If it's couple dancing it fits in our dance
universe. You want a polka then we will play one. Request a shag & you get
one. If I have the music for it or if you bring it we will play it. Judy
and I, like many other dancers, have our favorite dances and or not so
favorite ones. Our favorites may not be yours and the other way around but
that doesn't make one dance or style better than the other.

We are very fortunate that the studio owner feels the same way we do about
social dancing and is willing to rent us the studio. The only other venue
in the area where you get this kind of social dance mix is Country
Bootleggers in Yorktown. (see our links) No other venue in the area
actively supports this mix of
couple dancing styles in their social dances.

So, how large is your dance universe? Are your only looking in one
direction? Where is your point of view? If it's a little centered why not
expand a little. Come out and try our dance this Sunday.
