Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers,

Last week the Sunday dance was lots of fun and with the nice weather
everyone was in a great mood. Last week also was the end of the Salsa Rueda
lessons for now. If you are interested in doing this again let us know and
we will ask Bob & Marge. This last Sunday the Rueda started to make some
progress. Walter also wrapped up the Night Club Two-Step lessons but will
go over the last move for anyone who is interested.

Judy and I returned safely from skiing this week so we will be able to
dance and teach this coming Sunday.  After three days on the slopes we both
are glad that our primary recreation is dancing and not skiing.

This coming Sunday we will start the Social Foxtrot lessons. The basic
dance will be taught at 6:30 and a more intermediate move at 7pm. We do not
plan to teach any advanced moves during these lessons.

This week's tip is short but covers and important feature of smooth dancing
(Foxtrot, Waltz). Heel turns for both the man and lady are used to add a
new dimension to your smooth dancing. Although we use the heel turns in our
Foxtrot and Slow Waltz patterns, we are not qualified to teach them yet.

Any advanced smooth dance instruction should include the heel turn
technique for both the man and woman. The technique is similar but
different and my dance experience with ladies who can use heel turns have
shown me that if the lady sets it up then allows me to execute her turn the
whole thing comes out ok. If she tries to lead herself it doesn't. On the
other hand my heel turns allow me to maintain a tighter, more compact turn
when changing line of dance from back to forward.

Anyway, this tip is just a reminder to ask your instructor to show you the
technique. Prepare yourself for lots of practice time.

Our song of the week is a prelude to the Foxtrot classes and like most good
foxtrots is a popular song several decades old. Vic Damone's recording of
"Change Partners and Dance With Me" is about as smooth a Foxtrot as you
ever will find. The music and words were written by Irving Berlin for the
1938 Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers movie "Carefree". Vic Damone recorded his
cover of the song in 1962. My copy is on the recent release "Spotlight on
Vic Damone" There are several more great songs on the CD but this is one of
the best. Either for listening or dancing this music is the very best. Come
out to our Sunday night dance and experience the best recorded dance music
that you can find.
