Odds and Ends for this week's dance action in Tidewater

Hello Dancers,

Judy and I sure missed seeing everyone last Sunday night but we get another
chance this coming Sunday. We received many positive comments about the WCS
lessons and hope this Sunday will work out well also. I would like to thank
the many good swing dancers who showed up to help out. We are fortunate to
have many good friends who are as interested in social dancing as we.

Two more weeks of WCS in April and then on the Country Two-Step in May.

~~ Tip of the week:
In preparing for the WCS lessons Judy and I were immersed in a technique
video from Robert Cordoba and Deborah Szekely. One of the most fascinating
technical ideas concerned lead and follow. The basic technique asks a
couple to establish how a normal connection feels like. In other words "how
much pressure is in the normal connection". In WCS this is mostly through a
one hand connection and mostly using leverage or pull. Once the "normal"
connection is established then it can be assumed that any change in that
connection is a lead. It was also stressed that leading was to be done on
the first beat only. Anything more means the leader is dragging the
follower through the move. Once the direction of the lead is established on
the first beat the lead goes into neutral. The lady is to complete the move
using her own power. It's like driving a car. You give it direction (go,
stop, turn) but it moves using it's own power. In fact some ladies move
with more steering effort than others and some men assume all ladies need
extra effort. Let's all find that happy place where no one has to work hard
to dance.

Mastering this connection does not mean that you also master WCS. The dance
is incredibly different and difficult but mastering connection makes the
rest much simpler.

This technique of establishing a "normal" connection and maintaining that
connection when not leading a move can also be used in all other couple
dances. Some dances use less connection and some use more but the "rule"
remain the same.

On Friday April 23rd the Tidewater Swing Dance Club is hosting a dance at
