TSDC supports all of our Swing friends in the area, and these events are worth checking out.
Hi Everybody!!
This Saturday, Jerry and Peggy Porter continue teaching a series of beginner level West Coast Swing lessons at Blakely's. The lessons start at about 7:15 and are intended for newcomers - or those that could use a refresher (or a new perspective). Blakely's cover charge is about $5 and includes the lesson. The word is that Blakelys is no longer "country" on Saturday nights, but let's face it, they weren't playing that much country music anyway. We're optimistic that the music mix will be as good for West Coast Swing - maybe better!
This series will run up to and include June 5th, but there will NOT be a lesson on May 29th (Memorial Day weekend). If you want more info, you can email Jerry at: gporter5@cox.net or email the club.
If you need more info or directions, check out our web site: www.TidewaterSwingDanceClub.com

The Tidewater Swing Dance Club is planning a field trip to DC for the weekend of May 22-23rd. Kyle Redd and Sarah Vann Drake are coming from California for a weekend of great West Coast Swing lessons and dancing!
We rent a small bus (15 passenger) and all travel together. We can arrange room-sharing and we eat meals together. We have a fun group! We'll be leaving Williamsburg around 7:30am on Saturday, May 22nd and heading right to Cherry Hill Conference Center for the daytime workshops. Afterward we'll check into the hotel and rest before dinner (pizza!) at the hotel. Then it's back to the Cherry Hill for a terrific night of dancing. They'll play a slight mix - with some hustle plus more - but mostly it's great West Coast Swing music and lots of very good dance partners.
On Sunday there are more workshops with Kyle and Sarah and then a (delicious!) stop at Famous Dave's BBQ for dinner on the way home. We'll get back to Williamsburg around 9:00pm on Sunday.
All in all, it's a wonderful weekend and our repeat participation is nearly 100%!!
This is a "members only" event, but this could be just the excuse you've been waiting for to join the club! We've had two other field trips and they were both great successes. You can see pictures of last years trip to DC for Kyle and Sarah on the "Pictures" page of the club web site.
If you're interested in joining us, or just want more info, email the club at dancer "AT" tidewaterswingdanceclub.com

The Tidewater Swing Dance Club web site has been updated (new pictures will be added soon)!
www.tidewaterswingdanceclub.com
There is a description of the TSDC Advisory Board on the "Dancer's Corner" page, some great new "Swingin' Links", and info on membership on the "About Us" page.
Speaking of which, membership for 2004 will be only $20 for the year. Jerry Porter will be taking over as treasurer very soon, but for now, you can renew in person with any of the Advisory Board members or by mailing your check to Steve or Jerry. Email the club for more info.
We're developing membership cards for 2004! Participating local dance locations will offer a discount on their cover charge to members showing their valid TSDC membership card. We'll give you more details soon.
I also have to take a small bow, I passed the preliminary test toward teacher certification by the Golden State Dance Teachers Association. The test was the clumination of 40 hour of instruction by Skippy Blair over seven days at her studio in the Los Angeles area. It was a great experience and I plan to take the final part of the test some time this year.
Thanks, and I hope to see you on the dance floor!
Steve

Swing Dance Club
Where
we came from, where we are, and where we’re going…
West
Coast Swing is one of the fastest growing and most enjoyable dance forms
in the country today. Unlike
many stagnant dance forms that rely on a rigidly formatted syllabus and
countless hours of expensive instruction, West Coast Swing is a very
dynamic and musically interpretive dance that allows both men and women
to creatively interact to a wide variety of music from Frank Sinatra to
InSync. The dance is only
limited by your imagination and basic skill.
Once you learn the correct West Coast Swing fundamentals, and how
to converse with your partner within the context of the dance, you’ll
understand why so many dancers love to dance West Coast Swing till the
wee hours of the morning. Each
different song and each different partner provide a unique opportunity
to dance to the music – together!
The
Tidewater Swing Dance Club was formed in April 2002 to enhance the
social dance scene in the Tidewater area by promoting West Coast Swing
and developing a West Coast Swing dance community.
Throughout the summer of 2002 the club met at various established
local dances, taught introductory lessons, and recruited members.
Several series classes were also held to develop fundamental West
Coast Swing technique. In
September 2002, the club began hosting monthly dances at rented
facilities at both Southside Hampton Roads and
Membership
has grown to 114 current members! We will continue our “Out and About” gatherings at
established dances and increase the number club sponsored dances.
We plan to offer at least 16-18 club sponsored dances throughout
the Tidewater area in 2004! In January 2003, the club offered our first

This
is a great time to join the Tidewater Swing Dance Club or to renew your
current membership. Dues for new
members, and renewals are $20 per person
for the year. Your
membership entitles you to discounts at the club sponsored dances,
workshops, and series classes, and provides the opportunity to join
other members on club sponsored field trips.
In 2002 and 2003, members received a $ discount at club sponsored dances
and a $ discount at series classes.
Since we expect to host 16-18 dances it won’t take long to
offset your dues plus you’ll be supporting the formation of a West
Coast Swing dance community that will benefit the entire social dance
scene in the Tidewater area. “TSDC is going to be, bigger
and better in 2004!”
