Hello Dancers,
Thanks once again to all the dancers who came out to our dance on Independence
Day. We had a few more than normal which tells us that dancers don't give up
their relaxation for the holidays.
The first Hustle lesson went well considering the difficulty of the dance. Next
week we will review the basics and add a move.
+++ Friday July 9th will be our second Country Western dance. This dance
will be the last one that our friend Bill Agee will be attending before he
leaves the area. We are going to have a little send off for him during the
dance. We hope that all his friends will be there to wish him a safe trip.

The very basics!
When asked to teach a Parks & Recreation dance class we were faced with
figuring out how to teach someone who has never tried to dance. We started by
breaking down all our footwork and learned some very interesting things along
the way. We like the technical side of couples dancing and find it fascinating
discovering new dance techniques.
We like to break down the dance into it's most basic parts and what can be more
basic than moving and turning. So, in it's most basic form here are the elements
of moving. Linear movement forward, backward, sideways (both directions) and
diagonals (four directions) That is a grand total of eight
directions that we can move in a linear direction. Turning is easier as we can
only turn in two directions. If you add in standing still (Checks, Tap steps,
etc.) you will have a grand total of 11 elements of movement. These movements
are used everyday by anyone who walks to get around.
The trick that makes dancing different is how we control the movement. Most new
dancers seem to be able to move around pretty good but are very poor at control,
timing and remembering all the elements that makes each dance special.
Judy and I are now working on a series of practice exercises aimed at getting
new dancers moving in all direction with control. Sort of like a student
musician learning scales before music. It should be an interesting journey and
we welcome any ideas.
