Thanks again for coming out to our dances last week. We had a nice send off for Bill on Friday and again for Cherie on Sunday. It was tough seeing two of our friends leave the area. We wish them both a safe trip and great times in the future. We will miss them both.

Those interested in West Coast Swing should have a easy time finding a group class to attend over the next several weeks.

At "Dancing by Knight" the "Tidewater Swing Dance Club" is offering a four week series starting this Friday in "West Coast Swing - Beyond the Basics" series starting at 6:00. This Level 2 series starts at 6pm. Then on the same night at 7:15 is the Level 1 series - "Fundamentals for West Coast Swing" - Each class is $20.00 for TSDC members or $24.00 for non-members. Perry & Jenny Neal, "Two Left Feet" are offering a beginning WCS series that started last Friday the 9th and is continuing for four weeks. The class is offered at the "Golden Slipper" location at 2924 North Lynnhaven Road in Virginia Beach. The class costs $5.00 per class, per person. The class is for beginning WCS dancers and will teach all the basic fundamentals and some cool moves.

Sam & Denise Miller, "The Dance Club" are offering a series of three WCS group classes taught at "Dancesport VA". The classes are on Thursdays and started tonight the 15th. The classes are taught by Denise Miller at a cost of $10.00/ea per person. The beginners West Coast Swing Class starts at
7pm. The student will learn the basics along with new patterns. The focus is on lead and follow. The Intermediate West Coast Swing Class starting at 8pm, will work off of basic patterns concentrating on timing, styling, connection, and of course some really cool patterns. http://www.millertimedance.com for

Dance Tip:
Learning beyond the dance studio.

Every dance goes through an evolution as it gains popularity. Pick a dance style and somewhere in time it was popular enough to move into and back out of a dance studio. Some dances were born in a dance studio but many were not. Dance Studios and Professional Teachers bring a dance to the average
person who wants to learn but needs some standardized instruction. A good instructor will set up a lesson series that will start with the basics and advances the student through to an advanced proficiency level. This process can become quite costly but depending on many factors also very effective.

If the dance is popular enough there will be a certain number of dancers who may start a club based around the dance style. Any dancer who wishes to become very skilled, very quickly, should join one of these clubs. In an atmosphere where all the dancers are learning and helping, those less skilled can pick up a dance very quickly.

Today, West Coast Swing is hot. I remember when Bossa Nova was all the rage. In a few years there will be another dance that will be hot.

A dance studio is set up to teach according to a standard syllabus and usually does it very well. A club is more daring and experimental. A mix of both will make you a great dancer. A dancer must be comfortable with the instruction in order to get something out of it. If you open up to all the learning possibilities and take what feels the best and works the best, you will learn and be happy as well.
