Check out the GREAT NEW PIC of Walter and Judy (over 1 min load time at 56kb)

Hello Dancers:

Only days left until The annual New York City Big Apple Country and Western Competitions - March 10th 2005 Only days left until St. Patrick's Day - March 17th 2005

Judy and I were a little apprehensive before the last Sunday dance. We were worried that no one would show up due to the Superbowl. Our fears vanished when we had nice turnout of almost 50 dancers. Also we had an even mix of men to women. What a great surprise!

We had a real busy weekend hosting the "DanceSport" Friday dance, the "A Time to Dance" Saturday dance and then the Sunday dance.

Our Wednesday Intermediate WCS classes at "DanceSport" are going very well and with a very large turnout.

Judy and I thank everyone who has made our dances and classes a success.

++++++++++++++++++
Each Wednesday - "
DancesportVA" - Intermediate Two Step Group Class - 8pm - 9pm
This Two Step Class will be a continuation of the class taught in January with different patterns than taught during the January class. We will have no review of basics. This is a five week class with the cost of $10.00 per class or $44.00 paid in advance.  If you didn't attend the January classes, you can still come to the March classes - they will not be dependent upon each other.
++++++++++++++++++
All of the patterns we will be teaching will be learned best if the student has a partner with which to dance and practice. If you want to attend and need a partner please contact us and we will try to help out. If you want to attend as a single we will ask but not require the other students to  rotate partners. During all of our classes we will be teaching one move or pattern per half hour session. Some patterns are stand alone and others build on a previous pattern. We make every attempt to teach patterns that are "leadable" and social in nature.

Below is a sample of a weekly dance tip. More are posted at this link Dance Tips Menu

**********************************************

Stationary, or "spot" turns: .. Watch that shoulder!

How much movement can you get out of your shoulder?  Unless you have a stretchable collarbone... not much.

Why are we concerned about this? Bring your left hand up in front of you, to touch your left shoulder then out again. In doing so we can extend our hand from zero to a couple of feet. Unfortunately when two bodies are connected at the hands and one or both partners are turning, the maximum hand extension is not enough. This happens mostly when the partners are too far apart. Rotating bodies, connected at the hand and turning out of reach either pulls one - or both - off center, or in the best case they loose connection. If neither happens then the rotation stops. Often painfully.

When faced with this problem the obvious solution is to move your shoulder closer to your partner. If you are the one doing the turn you cannot. In fact at one point in the turn your shoulder will be moving away from your partner.

If you are the stationary partner you can move your shoulder closer in several ways. The first way, some dancers try, is bending at the waist. I call it leading with your jaw - and the result looks funny and can be painful.

Another method is to move closer. Often you have no reaction time to move closer; your footwork gets off, and your body is then in the way.

The best way is to rotate away from your partner, moving your shoulder and arm closer to your partner. This is a simple technique and practiced by few. To get an example of how much more arm extension you get stand parallel to and facing a wall. Move your left arm out in front of you, and walk back until the arm is extended and just the fingers are touching the wall. Then rotate to the right. While most of your body moves away from the wall your hand and arm now has much more extension.

When the man is turning the ladies need to keep this technique in mind as well.

Hopefully this will make those Cha-Cha or Salsa pivot turns a little easier.

Song of the Week

Song of the week: "Joe Cool"
This WCS is one I play often at our dances as I always can picture Snoopy in those COOL shades.  On the "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown" album B.B. King and Lucille bring a special sound to the WCS beat. I bought the CD for the music and found the WCS to be a nice bonus. Corny? Yes! But I love it anyway.

Dance Music Web Sites

This is not a dance site but we all have other interests in life (I hope) The web site for this week is a site devoted to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the State Park System.

Although other Virginia Agencies have been taking the heat lately, this one stands out for excellence. Most of us are aware of the Federal Park System but know little about the great Virginia Park System. Click below to find more about all the recreational opportunities available in Virginia. http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/

In keeping with the music topic here are a few live feeds to enable you to listen to music while you are at the computer.

WFOS 88.7 - http://eclipse.cps.k12.va.us/stream1.html

WHRV 89.5 - http://www.whro.org/radio/stream/whrv.wax

Elvis - http://solosong.net/elvis/elvis.html   (Solo Songs Place ( http://solosong.net/ ) - VERY Rich site, with Music & Poetry, and Graphics.  You'll find a long list of your favorite favorites and oldies,  by song, and by artist.  We especially like their Elvis Presley collection of over 85 songs, spanning his entire career (the only collection that we have seen that is more extensive than this is owned by Eleanor Bowers (a local dancer, who is no longer on the dancing scene) - http://solosong.net/elvis/elvis.html )

Latin - No web site, but remember that Roberto DJs on WHOV FM 88.1 every Saturday from 7AM-11AM

Send me more and we will add them to our web site.

Dancing this week around Southeastern Virginia

From the email this week:

There are many dancing activities available all during the week and far too many to list each week. Please check the links here and the links listed on our web site Two Step Tidewater Dance - links and other places to dance for many more places to dance. If your favorite local place is not listed it's because no one sent it to us. Please fix that problem by sending us the link and some basic information.

OUR POLICY: We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton Roads, Yorktown, Gloucester, and Williamsburg) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater area dancers.  We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites.  To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz.  Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement.  Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page.  We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page.  Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event.  In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to http://www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails.  (Not just C&W. We'll  include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.)  We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason.  We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
