Check out the GREAT NEW PIC of Walter and Judy (over 1 min load time at 56kb)
As we prepare to start another month, Judy and I thank all the dancers who
came out to our dances in June. The Sunday night dances were very well attended
as was the Friday Social and Swing dances.
The Saturday C&W dance was not well attended. Let us hear from you. We enjoy C&W
dance music, we enjoy working with Russ & Tina, we added line dance and we are
keeping the dance affordable. Is there something we are missing or should C&W
just go away outside of the clubs? We need your input please....
Come on out
dancing this Sunday!! Long Sunday hours.... 6:30 - 11pm
In July:
Group Class Series - Every Wednesday for 4 weeks - $10.00 per class or $35.00
for the series
7-8pm - Bronze American Waltz
This is a syllabus class that is designed to teach Waltz to the beginner dancer.
It is also a good tune up class for those who have moved beyond and wish to get
back to basics. We encourage those signing up for this class to plan for the
entire series.
We will be offering certain classes such as this Waltz class as a structured
class that you can use as a "Foundation" for that dance. The class will be
followed later in the year by an intermediate class. How soon depends on the
attendance for the first series.
For these "Foundation Classes" we are offering something better than a
guarantee. If you signup for the series and pay $35.00 you can attend the class
every time it is offered within the next 12 months for nothing. Given our
current schedule, this class will probably be offered 2 to 3 more times within a
year. When we offer the Intermediate classes we will make the same offer to
those who have taken the Bronze class. This is a very good deal for those who
want to stay within a graduated dance instruction program. It will give those in
the program a chance to keep taking the class each time it is offered. If this
concept works for us we may extend the time period past a year. This is a new
concept for us and we are hoping we can attract more dancers to the group
classes.
The only catch is that we will ask you to rotate partners on your own to
"assist" the new dancers just as you would during any social event.
Again...
1. Sign up this upcoming Bronze Waltz class for the full 4 weeks $35.00.
2. For the next 12 months you can repeat this class every time it is offered.
3. If you take the full Bronze or beginner class we will make the same offer to
you for the Intermediate classes.
4. Pay once and take the same series over and over again for a year!
Also on Wednesday 8-9pm - $10.00 per class or $35.00 for the 4 weeks.
Advanced Hustle Moves class. Not much technique only some real cool Hustle
moves. We will be teaching one Advanced pattern each week. We will finish each
hour with practice time to slow and moderate tempo Hustle music. We teach
Detroit style Hustle. (Three count, begins on the Slow or One beat, danced
mostly in a slot)
We will not be reviewing the series at the last class and will only offer
limited review each week. There will be four separate patterns taught during the
series. Each is very cool and each can stand alone. These are not the same that
we taught for the Intermediate series. Learn some or all four!

Are the Judges correct? (Referring to ABC-TV Dancing with the stars show on
6/29/05)
I'm sure many of you dancers have been watching the weekly live series on ABC
called "Dancing with the Stars" As in any competition we all have our favorites
but what about the judges. Were you like Judy and I and mostly agree with the
Judges comments or do you feel they were wrong? (Note: Dance Judges
are ALWAYS RIGHT, If you feel that the Judges are wrong, please re-read the
previous statement.)
The dance tip of the week is for everyone who dances. Watch the show and look
for what you need to look for if you were judging. We aren't judges but we do
have our opinions and have listed below is what we would look for. Does anyone
agree or disagree?
1. Does the dance look recognizable? Or, are there too much theatrics?
Remember one of the "Foxtrot's" was wonderful to watch, but the Judge chastised
them - They were doing what would have probably won them a medal, if the
dance event was called "Cabaret," but their dance was NOT Foxtrot!
2. Was the Posture appropriate for the dance style? Each dance has an appropriate mood and style, and, in particular, the "smooth" dances (Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, and Paso-Doble) all have distinct requirements for appropriate posture. Watch your favorite dancers, no matter what they are dancing -- now notice their posture. Do you see something distinctive?
3. Timing, is it crisp or sloppy? One of the easiest distinctions between "just dancing" and "gee-whiz" dancing is crisp moves by the dancers, in perfect time with the music and it's proper phrasing.
4. Selection of music? Is it good for the dance style or not? If you watched the Paso-Doble's only one of the dancers selected an appropriate Paso-Doble music piece. It's very hard to LOOK CHARACTERISTIC for the dance, when the music isn't characteristic.
5. Costume? Is the dancewear appropriate for the dance style. (except for one
couple mostly not on this show) 6. Flexibility and smoothness of movement. Do
the dancers flow across the floor and move cleanly together? If you
watched this show, most of the costumes would have been far more appropriate for
"Latin" dances (Rumba, Bolero, Cha Cha, Mambo) than for the smooth dances that
were being judged.
If you can recognized the above traits in the dancers performing you already
know far more about dancing than you think. If you don't, try to practice next
Wednesday. (Tape the show while you are attending our classes)

Since the "Dancing with the Stars" (Wednesday nites at 9:00 PM on ABC-TV) was
featuring the wonderful Foxtrot, the song of the week is also a great Foxtrot by
Bobby Darin - "I Guess I'll Have To Change my Plan". My copy is off his Mack the
Knife, The Best of Bobby Darin album. This song was written and released a long
time before this Bobby Darin version from 1961. The others are good but I like
this the best. Come hear this and other great Foxtrot music each Sunday night.

Dancing goes prime time on network TV!
Did you catch it? It's over, but the results are still posted on their
web site.
ABC-TV has made a bold move putting this type of show in prime time. But, it's a
neat concept. Professional dancers teamed up with celebrities. After watching
too many actors trying to look like dancers this should be much more realistic
(we hope). They will be competing in choreographed Cha-Cha & Waltz routines so
we may not get to see too much of actual learning or practice. We just hope the
camera sticks with the dancing long enough for us to pick up a new move or two!
Is the American Broadcasting Network and the local affiliate WVEC Channel 13
taking a chance? After the big sensation that the latest Shall We Dance movie
stirred up it might not be a big of a chance after all.
In our opinion we think it's a good start toward moving this fantastic activity
closer to public acceptance once again. But, like any activity, it's better when
experienced in person so tape it for later while you come out for our Country
Two-Step group series.

One of our series classes will fit anyone who has always wanted to learn West Coast Swing, would like to learn the simple concepts that make this dance easier and more fun, or would like to add some great new moves and techniques to their dancing. These are social dance classes (not competition style) and you will learn to lead and follow - any partner!

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk VA, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake VA, Suffolk VA, Portsmouth VA, Newport News VA, Hampton va, Hampton Roads VA, Yorktown VA, Gloucester VA, Jamestown VA, and Williamsburg VA) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater (Southside and Peninsula) area Hampton Roads dancers. We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites. To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz. Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement. Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page. We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page. Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event. In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails. (Not just C&W. We'll include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.) We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason. We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
