Check out the GREAT NEW PIC of Walter and Judy (over 1 min load time at 56kb)
Thanks once again for the support we are getting each Sunday and during our Group Classes.
We want to wish everyone "Good Luck" who will be dancing at Virginia State
Competition this weekend. We wish everyone a safe trip and great dancing!!!!
This Sunday we are hosting another Social dance and teaching Mambo from 6:30 -
7pm. Afterward the dance will continue until at least 10pm.
We are also giving everyone an early reminder about our July 22nd Swing dance.
As in the past, this dance is co-hosted by Walter & Judy - Brad & Janene. Same
time and cost. Same great music.
The Foundation Series Bronze Waltz class has been so successful we are adding
another series in August as well as continuing the Waltz with the next Bronze
level.
In July:
Group Class Series - Every Wednesday for 4 weeks - $10.00 per class or $35.00
for the series
7-8pm - Bronze American Waltz
This is a syllabus class that is designed to teach Waltz to the beginner dancer.
It is also a good tune up class for those who have moved beyond and wish to get
back to basics. We encourage those signing up for this class to plan for the
entire series.
We will be offering certain classes such as this Waltz class as a structured
class that you can use as a "Foundation" for that dance. The class will be
followed later in the year by an intermediate class. How soon depends on the
attendance for the first series.
For these "Foundation Classes" we are offering something better than a
guarantee. If you signup for the series and pay $35.00 you can attend the class
every time it is offered within the next 12 months for nothing. Given our
current schedule, this class will probably be offered 2 to 3 more times within a
year. When we offer the Intermediate classes we will make the same offer to
those who have taken the Bronze class. This is a very good deal for those who
want to stay within a graduated dance instruction program. It will give those in
the program a chance to keep taking the class each time it is offered. If this
concept works for us we may extend the time period past a year. This is a new
concept for us and we are hoping we can attract more dancers to the group
classes.
The only catch is that we will ask you to rotate partners on your own to
"assist" the new dancers just as you would during any social event.
Again...
1. Sign up this upcoming Bronze Waltz class for the full 4 weeks $35.00.
2. For the next 12 months you can repeat this class every time it is offered.
3. If you take the full Bronze or beginner class we will make the same offer to
you for the Intermediate classes.
4. Pay once and take the same series over and over again for a year!
Also on Wednesday 8-9pm - $10.00 per class or $35.00 for the 4 weeks.
Advanced Hustle Moves class. Not much technique only some real cool Hustle
moves. We will be teaching one Advanced pattern each week. We will finish each
hour with practice time to slow and moderate tempo Hustle music. We teach
Detroit style Hustle. (Three count, begins on the Slow or One beat, danced
mostly in a slot)
We will not be reviewing the series at the last class and will only offer
limited review each week. There will be four separate patterns taught during the
series. Each is very cool and each can stand alone. These are not the same that
we taught for the Intermediate series. Learn some or all four!
In August...
Wednesdays 7-8pm
Bronze Two Waltz - If you signed up for the Bronze Beginner Waltz Series and
sign up for this August Series we are offering the same package as in July. Sign
up for this Series and take it again free every time it repeats within the next
year.
Wednesdays 8-9pm
Beginner Two-Step - We have put together the same package for this dance as we
have for the Waltz. If you sign up for the entire 4 week series you can repeat
the class each time it is offered within the next year for free.

You like potato and I like potahto
You like tomato and I like tomahto
Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto.
Let's call the whole thing off
Remember the song?
It brings to mind the discussions on dancing. Is Hustle &123 or 12&3? I watch
"&1" Hustle instructors demonstrate moves by stopping after the "&1"
and starting the pattern on the "2". Although I can't reconcile myself to do
that, and feel the music and dance starts on the "one", once we get moving it
all works out until we stop. I enjoy dancing one way and others prefer something
different.
In Salsa do you can break on the "1" or on the "2" or on the "5" or "6"? I dance
Salsa/Mambo on the "Two" and use my body to accent the "Four-One".
Most Salsa dancers use their feet to accent the music. I don't but I watch,
admire and listen to them and even switch when the need arises.
I spent several hours researching the Mambo/Salsa/Hustle comments and
discussions on the internet tonight and have only concluded that good dancers
should dance the way they and their partner feel comfortable. That doesn't make
some "right" and others "wrong". Dancers feel and interpret the music
differently and the music varies from song to song and style to style. We also
dance the way we were taught. We also stopped telling "Left Handed" students
they were wrong years ago. The social dancer is only "wrong" when making their
partner uncomfortable or causing chaos on the dance floor.
The dance tip part is this. When taking a class listen to the instructor and try
it the way it's being taught. That doesn't mean you have to dance that way later
but is does mean you can add another viewpoint to you knowledge base. More
knowledge means you know more about a particular subject.
I think flexible dancers are better than rigid ones.

The song of the week is a Mambo. Caterina Valente & Edmundo Ross - "La Bamba"
It's lots faster than the music we will be teaching with but gives you and
accurate feeling of the Mambo. Very, very similar to Salsa but not entirely.

Dancing goes prime time on network TV!
Did you catch it? It's over, but the results are still posted on their
web site.
ABC-TV has made a bold move putting this type of show in prime time. But, it's a
neat concept. Professional dancers teamed up with celebrities. After watching
too many actors trying to look like dancers this should be much more realistic
(we hope). They will be competing in choreographed Cha-Cha & Waltz routines so
we may not get to see too much of actual learning or practice. We just hope the
camera sticks with the dancing long enough for us to pick up a new move or two!
Is the American Broadcasting Network and the local affiliate WVEC Channel 13
taking a chance? After the big sensation that the latest Shall We Dance movie
stirred up it might not be a big of a chance after all.
In our opinion we think it's a good start toward moving this fantastic activity
closer to public acceptance once again. But, like any activity, it's better when
experienced in person so tape it for later while you come out for our Country
Two-Step group series.

Please check the links here and the links listed on our web site Two Step Tidewater Dance - links and other places to dance for many more places to dance. If your favorite local place is not listed it's because no one sent it to us. Please fix that problem by sending us the link and some basic information.

OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk VA, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake VA, Suffolk VA, Portsmouth VA, Newport News VA, Hampton va, Hampton Roads VA, Yorktown VA, Gloucester VA, Jamestown VA, and Williamsburg VA) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater (Southside and Peninsula) area Hampton Roads dancers. We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites. To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz. Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement. Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page. We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page. Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event. In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails. (Not just C&W. We'll include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.) We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason. We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
