Check out the GREAT NEW PIC of Walter and Judy (over 1 min load time at 56kb)
Last Sunday the Martina McBride concert was postponed so Judy & I attended our Sunday night dance for fun! No wonder more people show up each week. We sure had a good time. Denise gave a very good beginner lesson in West Coast Swing to a packed house and Sam's music kept everyone on their feet. Our final count was another record, 103 dancers. It's going to be hard to top that!
****************************
The beginner Two-Step class on Wednesday was overflowing but still short two ladies. It's too late to accept any more beginners but there will be another class soon. In February we will be teaching level 2.
****************************
This Saturday - 01-21-2005 - Benefit dance for the "Tidewater Literacy Council" 8pm - 10:30pm with a beginner Rumba lesson. Please attend!
This Sunday - 01-22-2006 - Beginner Rumba at 6:30 then dance to mixed music from 7:00 - 10pm - $5.00
****************************
In February we will have another Jack & Jill contest!
Some preliminary numbers about the USA Dance New Year's Eve events that will
blow you dance-shoes off!!
There were 389 breakfasts served on New Year's Day.
(lots of dancers left before breakfast, and some preferred to dance and didn't
eat)
There were 270 plates set for the Thursday nite Dinner-dance
-- and may people came in just to dance, after dinner.
There were over 400 dance lessons and workshops taught during
the 4 time-slots per day. (at $13 or less for a 75 minute dance lesson,
from a world champion, this was a fantastic deal...)
The Sheraton Waterside Hotel filled all of its rooms up and
had to turn dancers away.
NOBODY KNOWS exactly what the body-count was for all events,
but let's estimate about 2,000 dance-events attended over the 5-day New Year's
Eve Gala. This was the 15th Annual event --- MAKE
YOUR PLANS, NOW, to attend the 16th Annual New Year's event next year!
Dances,
Please plan to attend our "Third Saturday" Fund Raiser dance. We hope to send a nice check to the "Tidewater Literacy Council"
----------------------------------------------
Lessons,
Wednesday night - 7-8pm Beginner Two-Step Wednesday night - 8-9pm Beginner Level 2 Foxtrot
We had extra men in both classes last week but I think we found a few ladies to join up. Even so, it's not too late to join in. We teach lots of lead & follow technique along with some cool patterns to go with the technique. Chance it and come alone of bring a partner and know for sure!

We have several dancers receiving an attached Word Document with a printed schedule. Please contact us if you would like to receive one also.

~~ Giving Back - Dancing has given Judy & I so much including each other.
Each month we will be hosting a charity dance to give something back to a local
charity. All profits from the dance will be given to the charity.
Judy and I will be donating our time each month. Please help us by recommending
a needful local charity and coming out to support this effort each month. We
intend to have this on the Third Saturday of each month unless pre-empted by
events and studio rentals already on the DanceSport VA Calendar.
Judy & I thank everyone who either attended or supported through a
donation our last two benefit dances. Although the dances were not as well
attended as we had wished we were still able to send a nice check to the two
charitable organizations. We are hoping that the word will get around for
January and we can do a little better. The January Benefit dance is
scheduled on the 3rd Saturday, January 21st.

~~ A nice thank you from the Virginia Beach SPCA ~~
Thank you so much for hosting the benefit dance for the Virginia Beach SPCA last Saturday. I had a blast with you, and really appreciate everyone's patience while teaching me all the coolest moves!
You may have already heard, but our animal medical expenses were up by over $20,000 last month alone. Benefits like yours help us raise the funds, and awareness, needed to continue to provide our lifesaving programs and services. Thank you for opening the studio for this special cause. The animals and the children thank you, too.
Best regards - April Talbott Strickland, Development Director, Virginia Beach SPCA, 3040 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23453, 757-427-0070, ext. 14, fax: 757-427-5939

~~~~ About "DanceSport VA" - The
DanceSport VA studio is located on Arrowhead Drive between
Princess Anne and Newtown Rd. From the Expressway take an exit onto Newtown Road
South, turn left on Princess Anne then Right onto Arrowhead just past Big Al's
muffler. The parking lot is not large but there are plenty of nearby business
with parking room at night and on Sundays. One, very convenient parking
area is in front of the small "strip mall" which fronts on Princess Anne, only a
hundred feet or so from the studio, on Arrowhead.
The studio has a large (3000 sq ft) dance floor as well as a separate smaller
(2000 sq ft) dance floor. It is a very clean, well maintained studio. They also
have dance shoes and apparel for sale. They have a very good Air Conditioning
system. The DanceSport staff has been very supportive of us and will make
everyone feel welcome. We have been assured that we can have Sunday night
without interruption throughout the year. Note: Two Step Tidewater
Virginia is NOT affiliated with DanceSport VA, or with ANY dance studio.
We simply rent dance floor space for our dances.
We hope everyone who has enjoyed the social dance on Sunday will continue to
attend. We will do everything we can to make this transition as smooth as
possible.
You can check out the studio and find a photo.
Tip of the week - USA Dance, Why support it?
We couldn't help but notice the dance organizations (Studios, Shoe, Jewelry, Apparel Sales) that came out in support of the New Year's Eve Tidewater Chapter Event. We also took note of those studios, vendors and local instructors who were absent. So, here are some of our reasons to support the local chapters. By support we don't mean just showing up. We mean helping out in some way and really supporting the chapters.
1. Instructors and dance professionals - Judy & I are part time instructors and thankful for every contact we get. While advertising the event we had a chance to direct dancers to our web site, have them pick up or download our flyers and in a couple of cases, contact us by telephone. Yes, we promoted the Tidewater Chapter, but also our own social dances and group classes. Maybe those absent studios and instructors already have enough business.
We saw Alan Hedgpeth, of AStepAbove Dance studio (no web site yet) get out on the dance floor with his students almost every night. Young or seasoned, beginners or experienced, they all got a chance to show their best. Alan also had a business card at almost every table on Saturday night. Do we think Alan made some contacts that night? Absolutely!! After our Two-Step demonstration we had several dancers ask about our classes and all our flyers were snapped up.
The performances we saw from the local instructors and their students were inspiring to everyone in attendance.
2. Studios - DanceSportVA (where we work, and Two Step Tidewater meets for our weekly Sunday dance) closed during the week which allowed all of their dancers and professionals the time to attend. They also had several studio and independent instructors performing. They were given a chance to distribute flyers to anyone present. Who doesn't need easy, inexpensive advertising directly to your target audience? Did DanceSportVA make some contacts? Absolutely yes!
3. Vendors - We don't know how successful the sales were but we saw many dancers looking over the product that were in display. We bought a couple of nice necklaces for Judy without going near a mall. (Thanks Jeff for the nice selection) The shoe vendors also have been at the NYE event for many years and must find this a good place to connect with dancers. How many vendors could have been involved. Many of us could have enjoyed a massage by Saturday night but none were there.
4. Non-Members - Where else can you belong to an organization that provides so much for so little? It's the least expensive club we belong to and we get the most out of our membership. Best of all, it's run by fellow dancers. With the new rules, instructors and studios can be even more involved.
Let's start planning for 2006!
All the local chapters need dedicated people to get involved. The USA Dance Tidewater Chapter is the largest and needs the most in the way of commitment. If you are willing to give lots of your time to your passion please contact them. There are also the USA Dance Peninsula Chapter, and the USA Dance Williamsburg Chapter in the local area. If you are ever in Richmond, Washington DC or Anycity USA, look for the local chapter(s) of USA Dance (They may still be listed as USABDA - United States Amateur Dancers Assn), and you will find lots of dancers of like mind - and plenty to do.
All of the chapters need the kind of support only a few of the studios provided the last few weeks. Support does not only mean showing up to teach at a couple of chapter dances then failing to follow through during the rest of the year. It means making a commitment to promote social dancing every day of the year; announcing local amateur dance events; and NOT competing with the chapter's monthly dance events.
The days when the private studio students were isolated are over. Sooner or later they will hear about the local amateur chapter dances, and when they attend, will the local professionals and studios be there? Will you plan to perform with your students during the next New Year's event?
After seeing the great local performances they did recently at both DanceSportVA & the Sheraton the Sunday dance lesson should be very, very crowded.
~~ Every Sunday - Roberto USUALLY (Click to check it out - sometimes they cancel) plays for dancing at Ft. Monroe Officers Club Sunday Brunch Dance. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ph. 788-5656 Fort Monroe, Hampton VA (Old Town Phoebus) - (Click for a map to Ft. Monroe in Hampton Va (Phoebus VA)). Some fantastic deal! You pay for the dancing, and they give you the brunch and champagne for free - OR - you can pay for the Champagne-Brunch, and dance for free... Come early, the buffet sometimes gets a little stale late in the day. You can dance off the meal, and there will still be plenty of time to get from the buffet to our regular Sunday Two Step Tidewater Dance. Roberto sez, "I hope you will continue to support my return to Ft. Monroe on Sundays. All you need to get on the base is your drivers license and vehicle registration. No club membership is required. If you need a reservation feel free to e mail me or call the club."
OUR POLICY: Webmasters; You are granted permission to copy any content from our web site, provided that you provide a link to http://www.twosteptidewater.com (Contact us by email if you would like a reciprocal link). We are always looking for ways to make Two Step Tidewater Virginia THE PLACE for dance information in the Tidewater area (Norfolk VA, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake VA, Suffolk VA, Portsmouth VA, Newport News VA, Hampton va, Hampton Roads VA, Yorktown VA, Gloucester VA, Jamestown VA, and Williamsburg VA) - and for other dance events or dance locations which are of interest to Tidewater (Southside and Peninsula) area Hampton Roads dancers. We prefer to exchange links with other dance-information sites. To add a dance link, or exchange links with your web pages, email Will Harper or Walter Schultz. Worthy dance events, may post to our web site by emailing a cut-and-paste ready announcement. Your announcement can be just a text announcement or even a full web page. We will host an ongoing web page, at no cost, for Tidewater Area dance-related activities, without their own web page. Be sure to include date, time, cost, contact and location information for your event. In exchange, we ask that anyone posting to our site, include a reference to www.twosteptidewater.com on your site and/or in your intra-group's mailing list emails. (Not just C&W. We'll include Ballroom, Swing, WCS, Disco, Folk, or just churches or other clubs with dances.) We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason. We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
