Hello Dancers,

Last Sunday we all had a great time. Even with 80 dancers attending it
seemed that we still had lots of room left. This coming Sunday we will teach
beginner East Coast Swing.

On October 26th - 28th Judy & I will be in Harrisburg, Pa attending the
Halloween in Harrisburg dance event. This is a our favorite out of the area
dance event. We have been attending since 1996.

contact us. The event is about 5-1/2 to 6 hour drive from our area. The
dance event is very well organized and features a very good assortment of
workshops, a big Halloween Party and a great dinner show featuring all
styles of dancing. We highly recommend this event to any level or style of
dancers.

A web site of the week is http://www.samdenisemiller.com/

Click on "Music Store" and check out the song lists. One of our very
favorite Waltz songs, "If I were a Painting" by Kenny Rogers is listed with
a iTunes link. If you have iTunes it will play right away. In addition,
there are links to several cool videos.

~~ The Dance tip this week is more about the connection between partners.

We firmly believe that "less is better" when is come to the amount of
pressure received and given in a dance connection. This applies mostly when
moving in a basic and easy pattern. An example I use many times is to stand
facing your partner and then walk toward them. It does not matter who
initiates this because the reaction is the same. Once you are inside your
partner's comfort space they will move backward. A new dance couple can
dance a basic box without touching.

This is what we mean when we teach a light connection. With a heavy
connection the follower does not pay as much attention to their partner's
movement and their partner must overcome the heavy connection in order to
move the partner. With a light connection both partners must pay close
attention to the movement. With no hands and no connection a box pattern
(and more) can still be danced easily.

There are also may times when there must be a stronger connection between
partners. Any time there is a quick rotating movement, such as pivot turns
in Smooth, the centrifugal force will increase the strength of the
connection. The real skill is how to control it. When dancing these figures
the connection will become stronger but must be balanced between partners.
There is always a center of rotation which must be located at a balance
point central to the rotation. If one partner attempts to "pull in" then the
connection is not balanced and the center of rotation will change. A
practical example is when one partner stands in one spot while the other
rotates around. The center of the rotation is close to the partner who is in
one spot. If both are rotating then the center moved to a point between
them. In both cases the connection increases relative to the amount of
rotation. The more rotation the stronger the connection and the stronger the
connection the faster the rotation. A practical application is to stand
beside your partner but facing the opposite direction. Lock right arms and
run in a circle. The speed obtained is relative to both the amount and
balance of the connection.
