(11/12/2007 ws)
Hello Dancers,
Slowly, slowly Judy & I are returning to normal. Less than a week out of
town and our schedule is turned on it's head.
The social dance last Sunday was as great as ever. We had lots of new people and
all the familiar friends.
This Sunday night we will be teaching a Beginner Rumba lesson at 6:30. Please
make plans to join us.
-----------------------------------------
Our November schedule can be found here http://www.twosteptidewater.com/Monthly_Schedule.htm
Both our Hustle and Waltz classes at DanceSportVA kicked off with a nice
turnout. Our Rumba class at RPM was full of dancers while the Tango class did
make our minimum. Thanks everyone.

~~ No group classes are scheduled for December ~~

We would like a little help in obtaining a few extra copies of the Virginia
Beach Magazine, Fall 2007 issue. On the cover, and in the inside article the
magazine features Judy's Grand Niece, Annika Jenkins. If you have a copy that
you would part with please let us know. Annika has requested a few extra copies
and we would like to get them for her before the next family get together at
Thanksgiving. Thanks...

The song of the week is a nice East Coast Swing. During the last UCWDC Event it
became apparent that the organization is slowly dropping the ECS. We still think
it's a nice dance. Here is a good one - Max Weinberg 7 - "Baby
Workout"

----------------------------
Our tip of the week is about social dance patterns, a list. What makes a good
social dance pattern? What does not? For those just learning to dance and
planning to attend some of the many dance parties in the area each week here is
my opinions on the subject.
1 - Leadable is the first requirement. If the pattern is difficult to lead then
it's not a social dance pattern. The difficulty is determining what is leadable
and what is not. The way for a fellow to figure that out is to start out the
dance with a few simple patterns and work up to the more complex ones. You will
figure out which are leadable real fast.
2 - Use line of dance (Smooth or traveling dances) - The line of dance is the
direction of flow Counter Clockwise around the dance floor. Patterns that
require you to move against traffic or stop abruptly are never great when others
are around you.
3 - Maintain your envelope (Rhythm dances) When dancing the Rhythm dances (Latin
and Swing) every couple on the floor has a slot or dance envelope around them.
The others expect your patterns to start and end within that envelope of space.
If all the dancers are dancing West Coast Swing with a North/South slot and you
decide to start a East/West slot either you have to adjust or the other have to
adjust. If everyone uses patterns that fit in the envelope of space around them
then the dances will become more social.
4 - Use your partner's movement to your advantage. Any pattern that changes your
partner's direction of movement has to be done to minimize the push and pull
factor. Our of our class examples is leading a crossover break in Salsa. When
done from a basic it is hard on the connection. When done from a cross body lead
it becomes much easier. The difference is how we use
our momentum.
5 - Be versatile. Every dancers should be able to adjust a little to their
partner. Tall guys do ask shorter women to dance. Short guys do ask taller women
to dance. Those that cannot make to adjustments to their frame and patterns will
hurt the connection. When faced with a difference in size leave out the patterns
that will not work well. Barrel rolls are hard but not impossible
however, in a social setting it's best to leave them out when you partner is
taller or shorter.
6 - Be aware of your partners skill level in turning. I see too many fellows
wanting to spin each lady just like they always do. Not all the ladies have the
same turning ability. Many are too new to have learned the technique. This goes
for the ladies as well. Some of you can throw in an extra turn. If the fellow is
new it will quickly make him lose his footwork.
7 - Pay attention. When dancing on a social floor you have to choose patterns
that fit well into the environment. Sunday night is a busy night with many
dancers of all levels on the floor. I seldom use big, bold complex patterns in
my Smooth dances early in the night. My partner may be capable but the
conditions are not right.
