The web site of the week will give you a little background in the Dance Style we are teaching this
Sunday. We teach the LA Style Hustle - http://www.streetswing.com/histmain/z3hustl1.htm
------------------------------------------
The song of the week is a nice, late night smooth Hustle, "Mind Games" Performed by The Bob James
Trio. This slow style of Hustle is avoided by some but I feel has a place in my song lists. Very
smooth!

----------------------------
Our tip of the week is about my slot.

Often, when the music starts, everyone watches the first couple on the floor to see what dance
matches the music. Sometimes, as in Waltz, there is not much to guess. In most cases everyone is
dancing the same dance. At other times my interpretation is different that others. I tend to avoid
the Lemming theory. Often, that finds us dancing a Rumba to a fast Cha-Cha or a West Coast Swing
while others are dancing a Foxtrot. There is no correct answer here just our personal
interpretation of the music.

To go along with this we make sure we adhere to the Rule of Dance Floor Etiquette regarding the
flow of dance around the floor http://www.wcs-dancer.com/DanceFloorEtiquette.html When everyone is
dancing a stationary dance it matters little what style is being used. When we are dancing a West
Coast Swing and others are dancing a Foxtrot it does matter.

Judy and I are always positioned dead center of the dance floor as to not impede the flow around
the outside lanes. Our slot is about 3ft x 10ft more or less. The problems we've had are with the
couples who feel that we are buoys anchoring the turns for a boat race or zig-zag across our slot
as they take a short cut across the floor. It seems there are always some of those couples around
every time we dance in the center.

For the new dancers we usually give way. We can tell those by the "deer in the headlights" look on
the guy's face. We under stand. He is stuck in a pattern and cannot figure out how to alter course.
We have been there and sympathize. The others who already are good enough to know better should be
more careful. Some of our West Coast Swing patterns are pretty fast moving and hard to alter in
mid-step. Many times I have led a Whip pattern only to find a couple in my slot just as I was
leading the exit. Sooner or later there will be a collision that no one wants. Judy is a light
weight but her years of nightclub dancing has taught her to lead with her elbows in tight quarters.

My tip is to those guys listed above. Click the link and look at the diagram. Pay attention to
others around you. Just like when you are driving on the expressway... I hope...
