As of 12-20-2007
(12/27/2007 ws)
Hello Everyone,
Last Sunday was a very slow night for attendance but a very up-tempo night for
those who came out.
We have about five responses to our question about dance tempos on Sunday night.
All in favor of
playing the faster tempo songs right from the start. Those that came out seemed
to like the music.
This coming Sunday night, December 23rd - Judy & I will be teaching the
2-step. Please join us for
our last social dance of 2007.

For those of you coming this Sunday we will NOT be teaching this level of
2-step. It is cool
though.
----------------------------
In a little over a week we will be attending the USA Dance - Tidewater Chapter's
New Year's Eve
event. If you have been attending our Sunday dances you have heard our friend
Will Harper speak
about the charity being supported this year. By all indications the attendance
for this event is
going to be a little less this year. We hope you can sign up and make a
difference while having a
great time to boot.
Here is their web site. http://www.alz.org/seva/
----------------------------
Our tip of the week is about attending an event of this size.
Judy & I have attended a few large dance events over the last several years.
Over that time we have
accumulated a few ideas to pass along.
1 - If you can swing it get a room at the host hotel. During all events there is
always a little
down time needed. A hotel room is the best place to relax, freshen up and
prepare for the next trip
to the dance or workshop floor.
2 - Plan in advance - Every event, including this one, publishes in advance a
schedule of workshops
and events. Before arriving sit down and highlight your schedule. Make sure you
leave time to eat
and rest.
3 - Investigate the when and where for your meals. In many cases the hotel or a
nearby restaurant
is a good choice for breakfast or supper. The noon meal usually has to be worked
in around
workshops. A big lunch with lots of carbs will hit you hard about 1/2 hour or so
after you eat.
Unless a nap is planned grab an apple or energy bar instead. Breakfast probably
came late anyway.
Carry and drink lots of water. Even in winter you will need the extra energy it
provides.
4 - Bring plenty of casual clothes to wear. Too many dancers go to an out of
town event bringing
only dress up stuff. If you are going to be hanging out at an afternoon dance or
taking workshops
something comfortable is always a better choice.
5 - Use a small travel purse or for the guys, a money clip. There are just too
many chances to
leave anything else behind in a workshop room.
6 - Bring a camera but find out the event rules for using one. Most still
cameras are ok and
sometimes a video camera is also. Many events require you to purchase a video
pass if you want to
record your workshops. Many others do not allow it at all.
7 - Take care of your body - You will be dancing more over a few days than you
usually do in
several weeks. If you have a chance to sit down do it. Try to find time to
stretch in the morning.
If the hotel has a pool or sauna use it. Power naps can help when you were out
late dancing.
8 - Do your homework - Check the workshops and the cost. If most are not of
interest or in your
level then just purchase the ones you want. If you want to attend several then
go for the package.
Usually the best prices are for the complete package purchased well in advance.
9 - Experience the entire event. - We hear too often that those in the area will
not attend the
nightly dances offered at a local event because they cost more. Yes they do but
the organizers of
the event are not attempting to put together a group of cheap social dances. The
organizers are
putting together a dance experience that you will only get once a year in this
area. If you are
worried about the cost consider it a vacation. Plan ahead and take advantage of
the package rates.
10 - Stay relaxed a little with your schedule - Even though your schedule is
complete there are
times when you have to be flexible. Make sure you place priorities on what you
must attend and be
flexible on what you would like to attend. If you need some down time one
afternoon you won't feel
too bad about it.
11 - Meet new friends - This event like many will have dancers coming in from
all over the country.
Judy & I always see other dancers that we met while attending an event. Many
are on our email list.
Many of them also can give you recommendations of a nice dance venue out of town
to visit.

We will attempt to post/remove events within a couple of days - but we cannot accept responsibility for missing an event or any other reason. We will attempt to verify ALL links, to prevent any offensive or off-topic links, but, again, cannot be responsible for other's.
