The dance tip of the week:
When learning any new pattern or movement I find it advantageous to break down the movement into
the leaders and the followers parts independently. When doing this I keep in mind how the lead,
follow and body position of each influences the other. When teaching the basics of this we use
Merengue music and keep the students mostly in place. When this technique is applied properly the
students can practice all sorts of simple turns while concentrating on how the hand/arm position
influences the turn. Leads become clearer and bad leads can be fixed easier. Once the simple
movements are cleaned up we can then advance to some more complex patterns.

On the social floor my Merengue appears to be very complex with lots of different leads and turns.
This is my practice time. If you wish to be a better leader give it a try.
