The song of the week is a real pretty Waltz but tough to dance. The song "If I were a Painting"
sung by Kenny Rogers is difficult but as redone in this video has a nice steady Tempo. If you want
a nice showcase song and are willing to work at it this song is great. The video is from a segments
of Strictly Come Dancing from BBC in the UK. The show was the basis for our Dancing with the Stars.

The dance tip of the week:
In your partner's space? Are you guilty of this dancing and social bad habit? If you walk up to
someone and begin talking to them do you automatically stay a comfortable distance from them? There
seems to be an un-written guideline as to how far away you stand when talking to another. Why does
this change so much when dancing and does it have to change?

The question posed to us the other day was - "If a proper Ballroom dance hold has the couple
making body contact how can you not be in each others space"?

On this page is an illustration of a closed Ballroom hold:
http://www.ballroomdancers.com/Learning_Center/Dance_Positions/info.asp?pos=cpb.

If you look at the illustration you will note that although they are in body contact the faces
are apart. (The feet should be a little further as well)  In dancing the perception comes from the
face. On the same page linked above there is a tab to the variation of the week. This will show a
couple dancing Waltz in closed hold.

As social dance instructors we seldom have the chance to teach the closed hold in the Smooth
dances. We do teach couples to stay out of each other's space. If you ask your partner to dance and
take a comfortable dance hold you will probably be automatically a safe distance from them even
though you are in a dance hold. The trouble for some starts when beginning to move. In some dancers
a bad habit develops that makes them bend at the waist when lowering prior to movement. By bending
at the waist that comfortable distance is now gone. Are you guilty? The only real way to tell is to
film yourself dancing or ask your instructor. Your partner is usually too polite to bring it up.

Some instructors have to resort to lots of different methods including a yardstick under the
shirt and down the back to break the bending habit. We have not gone that far. However we do have a
completely different technique planned that should put an end to the bending habit the next time we
are faced with it. Wait and see.....

Note:
Additions to our emailed "other venue" dances will be included at our discretion.
Not included will be:

1 - Dances located in non-dance businesses (Bars, Night Clubs, etc.) They can afford their own
advertising and never promote our dances.
2 - Dances that conflict with our schedule
3 - Dances run by instructors and/or studios engaged in unethical lesson sales.
4 - Dances run by instructors/studios/individuals that do not promote our social dances as a return
favor.
5 - Dances that I do not know about. I can't include them if I don't know of them.

We promote venues that offer a clean, well run social dance atmosphere. As a rule, although we
promote dances at different venues, we do not promote studios or instructors other that those we
work with and trust.

Any other ideas???   Mail it to us:     ( Walter & Judy Schultz or Will Harper
