The dance tip of the week: Do you dance like you drive?

Think about how you dance and how you drive. My bet is that the styles will be similar.

If you usually drive in your own little bubble you probably dance like that also. You know how that
is... Pull onto the interstate, don't merge just drift over in front of another car. Do you enter
the dance floor the same way? Cruise along in the fast lane oblivious to all the other dancers who
are moving at a normal pace? Sound familiar yet?

Maybe you are the type of driver we see in downtown Portsmouth. Everyone is going along at a nice,
steady pace when you spot someone you know beside the road. Just stop right in the road, roll down
the window and get a conversation going. How many times have you stopped on a dance floor and maybe
started backing up just because you wanted to get familiar with a certain old pattern that belongs
elsewhere?

How about the ones that are traveling twice the speed of everyone else? On the dance floor is your
Foxtrot always Quick, Quick, Quick, Quick. Try slowing down to the normal Slow, Quick, Quick tempo
like those around you. Maybe you won't feel the need to slam on the brakes so hard.

How about the other half? Are you the kind of follower that helps out when needed or do you just
direct every movement? A good passenger will keep an eye out for imminent collisions as will a good
follower. A bad passenger will be hitting the imaginary brakes, giving directions and attempting to
drive from the wrong seat. A bad follower will attempt to anticipate everything.

A good driver as well as a good leader can move quickly and efficiently by being aware of the
surroundings. Watch far enough ahead and you will avoid getting caught in a pile up. Don't drive or
dance right along side someone else. Sooner or later someone will need to move to another lane.
Protect your partner or your passenger. Fancy maneuvers in crowded situations will cause a disaster
either way.

Do you dance like you drive?

America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're
going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
~~ Hillary Clinton ~~

Note:
Additions to our emailed "other venue" dances will be included at our discretion.
Not included will be:

1 - Dances located in non-dance businesses (Bars, Night Clubs, etc.) They can afford their own
advertising and never promote our dances.
2 - Dances that conflict with our schedule
3 - Dances run by instructors and/or studios engaged in unethical lesson sales.
4 - Dances run by instructors/studios/individuals that do not promote our social dances as a return
favor.
5 - Dances that I do not know about. I can't include them if I don't know of them.
6 - We seldom advertise lessons offered by instructors outside of DanceSportVA. There is just not
that much space in this newsletter.

We promote venues that offer a clean, well run social dance atmosphere. As a rule, although we
promote dances at different venues, we do not promote studios or instructors other that those we
work with and trust.

Any other ideas???   Mail it to us:     ( Walter & Judy Schultz or Will Harper
