Mom/Mama/Yvette/Nanny/Roberto's Mom
These are the many aliases my Mother was known as. She passed away yesterday morning after another long battle with cancer. A fighter till the end. She was my biggest fan. Supporting my music career since I was a child. There when I needed her to take care of me. One of those very important moments was when I suffered a very serious accident in the 70's that almost ended my musical career. It was her insistence and inspiration for me to fight that returned me to my music after two years of convalescence.
Those of you who knew her will remember her spunkiness and happy way of looking at life. Helping me with the door at Steppin Out gave her the opportunity to enjoy my music and my friends for many years. "I will miss her!"
Our family is planning a memorial for her on Thursday of next week, the 26th, at the Catholic Church of Mt. Carmel in Newport News at 7 PM. If you're interested in going e mail me for directions. After the memorial I will have a reception at my house to celebrate her life. RSVP.
May She Rest In Peace,
ROBERTO
Nanny, my mom, is gone
This morning, 6/18/03, at 10:20 my mom passed away.
She went to join all her loved ones that had gone before her.
I had been at the nursing home, day and night, since Friday when she had a stroke and it was evident that she was not going to beat cancer for a 4th time.
She was not kept alive through any outside means, which was her advance directive signed a few months ago. We only had her on oxygen and morphine to keep her comfortable and without pain, as were her wishes. She continued to fight until the end, and it was the opinion of the nursing home chaplain, that sometimes people get so used to fighting for their health all their lives, that when the time comes to let go, their body has no idea how to do that...this was the only explanation as to how she could have lived from Friday to today, Wednesday.
We are having a memorial for her on the 26th, at Our Lady of Mt Carmel (still waiting for the priest to call me to finalize this), and later we are having a party to celebrate her life at my brother's house, as she requested.
It's been a rough week, but she is now at peace and no longer suffering.
Love to all,
Leonor (Lee) Henriquez Guy
